The legendary swordsmith Shikizaki Kiki made 1000 swords in his career. The more swords a state had, the greater success they had in the wars. When the Shogun emerged victorious, he collected 988 of the swords...but those were just practice.

The final twelve swords were the pinnacle of his career. Each of them has powers so extraordinary, one man could defeat small armies.

Shogunate strategist Togame has been ordered to recover them. She first hired a ninja...but the worth of the swords is so great the entire ninja clad defected the moment they recovered one. Then she hired a swordsman...but he kept the sword for himself.

Her last hope is Shichika, the seventh and last practitioner of the Kyotoryuu -- No Sword School. He and his sister live on an island cut off from civilization -- they have no need for money. His sword school does not use swords -- he would not want the swords for himself.

So why should he help her?

"Because you will fall in love with me."

Wow, a really great ending to Katanagatari. I really did not expect Togame to kick the bucket like that, but I guess that's really what made the episode all the more enjoyable. Shichika basically goes into "seed mode" after that and breaks all the swords he collected in the past year. In addition, I really loved the psychological mind gaming coming from Hitei. At first I really thought she was serious about being dead, but the end of the episode was a real big shocker when she's now the one traveling with Shichika. Good End Haruka

On to the review, Katanagatari has an episode that comes out each month. There was really only one major flaw in this show and it's the repetitiveness. Each episode was basically find who has the sword, attempt to get the sword, fail at getting the sword, attempt again, fail again, think up a strategy that works, get the sword, end of episode. While there were some twists to each episode, the first 11 episode was primarily this formula with the exception of episode 4. This really bore me to no end after a while unfortunately and the small little gags in between didn't really improve the mood. Episode 12 however was definitely great in tying everything from the previous 11 episodes while expanding and concluding the whole Shikizaki plot for creating the swords. In addition, for better or for worse, the lack of a small recap potentially hurt the series since after 12 months, I surely don't remember some of the stuff that happened in the previous episodes. As much as people dislike recaps, for a series like this it wouldn't have hurt since it airs once a month.

The animation quality was very unique. White Fox, who also did Tears to Tiara earlier this year produced a level of animation that I never thought I would see in this day. While the animation and art varied from episode to episode, the changes in touch of Japanese mural art styles seemed very fitting for the show, almost as if watching the show itself was like scrolling across a long and real mural. White Fox will also be doing the animation for the upcoming Steins;Gate anime in Spring 2011.

Music was all right. Nothing exceptional considering it's coming from Minami Kuribayashi and ALI PROJECT. The endings weren't really memorable since it was a month between each episode and each ending only played once. As for seiyuus, Yukari Tamura as Togame was priceless as was Haruka Tomatsu as Hitei. Yoshimasa Hosoya was pretty average. He has only starred as Juu Juuzawa from Denpa Teki na Kanojo for a main role, and in both Denpa Teki na Kanojo and Katanagatari, the results are really near top tier seiyuu quality. Maybe he'll get better in the long run as he as new role in the upcoming Level E series in January.

Character development is surprisingly good in this series. Although 90% of the characters primarily show up for one episode and never appear after that, most of them come back in flashbacks throughout the series, which is nice since it shows that Shichika and Togame learned from their past experiences to some extent, even though they rehash the same episodic formula each episode. I really liked the buildup of how Shichika was actually sword created by Shikizaki nonetheless. It really put a spin on the story. Hitei, however had a rather weak development. She was suddenly known as the descendant of Shikizaki out of nowhere, and that annoyed me since we knew essentially nothing about her until this episode except the fact that she mildly despised Togame throughout the series.

Enjoyment? Well, I definitely cannot say I hate this show. However, I can't say the show was perfect either. It was definitely something new and unique compared to everything else around. Like I said before, the show has the main flaw of rehashing the same formula each episode. This bored me to no end for most episodes, especially when they were mainly one shot characters, i.e. every episode that didn't include Nanami except episode 12.

Overall, Katanagatari is not quite perfect, but it definitely had a purpose. Really sad to see no Togame "cheerio" in the final episode but definitely loved the Hitei ending. That was a mind rape right there and was quite the unexpected surprise. The pacing was overall good for each episode but again, cutting down the repetitiveness for the show may have made it perfect.

Preliminary Score: 8/10
Final Score: 9/10

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the ending of this anime. This entire show got high marks from me the whole way through. Though the ending was more on the bittersweet and sad side, I enjoyed the whole, semi-twist on the goal Shicika and Togame had. And I'm a person who loves them last minute twists . I also enjoyed the fact that the anime ended. Most animes nowadays end open ended with a possibility of something occurring after the ending. This anime ensured that this was in fact, the end. The artwork was quite unique and the decision to make each episode around 49 minutes long just added to the awesomeness of this anime. Overall, Katanagatari, for me, gets a 9.5 out of 10. And for Togame, CHEERIO!

Actually Shichika did mention to the princess that he doesn't want her to follow him, but she did so anyways since she had nothing against him to begin with. So in other words I think she is following him in wondering why Togame picked him in the first place.

In any case it was more like she was following him because she wanted to do so, and since he didn't want her to follow him it made it even more worth while for her.

I really like this show, but the ending just not the ending that I want it. It's sad that Togame died. I just don't know why they kill her off. Shichika should have gone on his journey alone without the princess. I just disappoint that this is how the show end. I would prefer a different ending then this ending.

Also fairly disappointed with the ending, how Shichika just decided to let the princess go with him. Didn't like that development at all, kind of felt like she would take Togame's place and that's just wrong - would have much preferred him making the trip alone or even more so dieing from the injuries he sustained with Emonzaemon.

I agree with you on the injuries bit. I kept waiting for the text "13: completed deviant blade Yasuri Shichika - BROKEN to pop up. It would've been such an epic end.

On the Hitei-hime bit, I think the story gave the "Real her" a bit of a shaft. It always seemed like Hitei was the closest thing Togame had to a best friend, one pride shattering moment away from the walls falling down and them becoming accomplices. Hitei said at one point "I'm a very denying person". I kind of get the idea that, once the Shikizaki family plan had come to a close, she just simply denied her past and moved on, and Shichika's survival gave her a convenient way to live out a life she had denied but was simply jealous of - Togame's.

That said, I was looking forward to seeing her get plastered all over a wall like the Flunky with Sentou tsurugi did. Then Shichika failed to deliver. *sigh*

I REALLY liked this series, I totally rate it with top marks. That said, I'm both massively disappointed/sad at the ending whilst still being kind of content with it. I hate the fact that they killed Togame. I'm really disappointed in that choice for many reasons - especially how simply she died...it was just so...anticlimactic...
At the same time, I do respect the choice and to show how simple and mortal she was, that a simple shot with no fuss would kill her.
Still don't like it though.

That said, the whole fighting through the castle was pretty epic, and the "battle" with the 10th sword (with no blade) was absolutely hilarious. "Why don't you just throw it at me?" "Alright." *toss* *kick back for a knockout*

Overall, I love the series and absolutely recommend it to everyone, just can't get over the feeling of distaste and displeasure at the ending though.

Ok after seeing how this all ended makes me want to marathon it so see if I missed anything sinc eI do get that feeling out of this. Although with the way things ended and the Epilogue they showed here was kind of a tearjerker if you ask me. In any case it was well worth watching this series from start to end though. although it might be worth watching it again to try and write up a review for it somehow.

Woah. Can't say much more than that. Wait. Yes I can.

CHEERIO~

Also, I don't think Hitei-hime's personality changed at all. We just really only ever got to see her scheming before this. Most of her antics seem the same in the end.

Damn what an ending. It couldnt have been further away from what I predicted. But it was great. Except for Hitei-himes personality change at the end. She was so great throughout the series so it was quite a letdown.
Never would Ive thought that Togame dies. If one of these two would die I thought it would be Shichika.
And man what a killing spree he did at the end when he was at full power. Overall this series had a lot of deaths, but that was just f*cking great. Seeing how he ruthlessly onehitted everyone except Enzoemon (or so) was a great pleasure.

But too bad we really didnt see the fight against Sabi the formerly strongest swordsman.

Overall a nice series which got a bit boring after Nanami died but it ended really great. Still I think a 24 or 26 ep anime wouldve been better.

I give it a 8/10, more a 8,5 but halfs are uselss and its more of a 8 than 9 so an 8.

Wolfie-san, I'm shocked, I've had suspicions since episode 6 that Kutoyru has been linked toeh the Deviant Blades.
If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. If you are constantly trying to make the ultimate "sword" the ultimate expression of a weapon in martial arts is to not need the physical weapon itself so going from having a sword then going to something that is only called a sword because it is a weapon is 1 step and if something can be a sword in only name then the final evolution is "no sword" which is Kutoyryu(?).
And throughout the show our not-so-bright hero has been called a sword himself and thinks of himself as a sword.
It was rather touching though when he answers why he fights in the first place.
All in all I'm very much looking forward to the showdown betwen the princesses and the swords and the ninjas. It should be interesting I think
