Oct 14 2011 06:19 PM Dantalian no Shoka...Gainax's most recent work and based on the light novel of the same name. Set in the Victorian era, we follow Hugh Anthony Disward and Dalian as they attempt to recover the mystical tomes that are scattered/created throughout Europe (mostly England).
Story wise, this show is poor. It takes forever to get its head on straight and even when it does, it fails to convey it in a proper manner. Even thinking about it for a while is difficult to comprehend.
Animation wise, the show is decent. A different style from what GAINAX usually uses (except episode 10 or 11). The budget was clearly decent and likely the biggest focus of the show.
Music was average overall. The OP sequence and the bgms were decent, the ED was horrible, and seiyuu was decent but lacked much emotion.
Enjoyment? It started out fairly decent and quite interesting, but as the show went on, there was a lack of a solid direction and the story became relatively random with only a few dots connecting by the end of the show, making it feel as if this show was a waste of time.
Overall, I was disappointed. With GAINAX on board, I was hoping for a good piece of work, but I guess the argument with the author of the light novel resulted in poor anime scriptwriting in the end, to the extent that the December OVA was canned.
Preliminary Score: 8/10
Final Score: 6/10
