Dantalian no Shoka...Gainax's most recent work and based on the light novel of the same name. Set in the Victorian era, we follow Hugh Anthony Disward and Dalian as they attempt to recover the mystical tomes that are scattered/created throughout Europe (mostly England).

Story wise, this show is poor. It takes forever to get its head on straight and even when it does, it fails to convey it in a proper manner. Even thinking about it for a while is difficult to comprehend.

Animation wise, the show is decent. A different style from what GAINAX usually uses (except episode 10 or 11). The budget was clearly decent and likely the biggest focus of the show.

Music was average overall. The OP sequence and the bgms were decent, the ED was horrible, and seiyuu was decent but lacked much emotion.

Enjoyment? It started out fairly decent and quite interesting, but as the show went on, there was a lack of a solid direction and the story became relatively random with only a few dots connecting by the end of the show, making it feel as if this show was a waste of time.

Overall, I was disappointed. With GAINAX on board, I was hoping for a good piece of work, but I guess the argument with the author of the light novel resulted in poor anime scriptwriting in the end, to the extent that the December OVA was canned.

Preliminary Score: 8/10
Final Score: 6/10

Pretty much this is GINAX being GINAX when they aren't doing something mech baised. Besides they are known to do trollish things to begin with so the end was kind of expected to begin with.

In any case the series was kind of stand alone type of series where you didn't need to watch every epsidoe to get the gist of things unless you wanted to get to know the characters a bit more.

Granted this series kind of needed a second season since the Biblio Princesses kind of met for the first time thoughout this series, so you kind of want to see some kind of expansion here, but I highly doubt they would do it though.

Hmm, i can't say i disagree with Killer_Ossi. Still i can't say that the whole series was bad. It had a few nice episodes like episode 4. But even the good ones had problems in being at a consistent entertaining level in the episode itself..The characters lacked the depth that is needed to really care about them. The story fell apart too many times and even the animation itself wasn't very strong.
Due to this i am giving it a 5 out of 10. This was sure disappointing compared to other series.

The second worst series (after Itsuka ...) and a huge disappointment since it was said to take Gosicks spot before it aired.

Characters were almost all worthless (even Huey and Dalian got worthless over time), the plost were mostly silly, stupid and boring and the overall plot was almost a bigger mess than in Itsuka ... .

Only a 4/10 from me.

Ok with epsidoe 9 we pretty much have a production value drop due to the whole episode being in a book that Huey and Dalian trying to fix. To think they were fighting book worms inside that story.

Ok so we pretty much get one epsidoe that has absoultely nothing to do with Dantalian then we go back to her without seeing or hearing anything from those two.

In any case the little Tsundere Loli is easy to please with sweets or anything else. So prety much it was another ordinary day for them aside from Huey's subordinate getting into trouble with not only a Phantom Book, but a woman along with it. Pretty much his friendliness towards women is pretty much his major downfall with the one he snagged by mere fluke. Although it was funny that Dantalian said she was supprised as to how dying once didn't even cure him of his stupidity here.

Just watched ep 5 & 6 now and Im getting more and more disappointed of this show. Mostly because the storys begin good and end up horrible (best example ep 5 where the end destroyed everything) and most of the characters (almost everyone except Dalian) are totally useless and unelievable (for example the former subordinate of Huey or Violas father).

Sure its interesting that there are at least two more like Dalian but even that is already predictable as hell whats gonna happen.

I already thought it creepy and disgusting when Huey gets a book from Dalian but this time it was even creepier and more disgusting with Flam.

So with this epsidoe we don't have our tsundere girl but another girl with the same abilities it would seem. Never the less I find it wierd and yet interesting to see a gril willing to be tied up like that though, but to each his own.

Never the less it seems like this guy has an artifact that can use the Phantom Books is trying to hunt down either Lil' Miss Tsundere herself, or someone just like her. In any case why did I feel like I was watching a side story of FMA here somehow?

Ok with epsidoe 5 I was sure that there would of been something close to a Giant Robot of some sort in this epsidoe due to Ginax being what they are.

I mean I felt a bit of Gurren Laggan here with all the beam lights and whathave you and to do the trolling at the very end. So yeah this was your normal episode done by them.

The only problem was the thing that should be the climax of the episode: that fusion of the writer and his lover. It felt stupid. Another ending like getting the crazy fan involved into that cycle of death would have been better.

My sentiments exactly. That is what I thought would happen, so maybe I should give them a little credit for stepping outside my expectations, but the whole immunity thing was too silly.

It was Misery meets Ladyhawke, BTW. Well, sort of.
