Actually, that is completely wrong. In orbit the STS uses what is called an Orbital manoeuvring system (OMS) to alter it's orbit, boost it into a higher trajectory, and to initiate a De-Orbit burn. Interestingly enough, the manoeuvre would simply require a 5 minute full burn to boost its speed to a level where it's apogee would extend out.
I doubt you recall this, but there was a shuttle mission (127) recently which acted to boost the ISS into a slightly higher orbit using the OMS.
There were a number of technical flaws in the series but most of them are forgiveable since it is used as a dramatise motive.
For instance, if the Capsule was off course, it would have been noticed by telemetry within 2 seconds of it's drift from it's trajectory.
Second, When using thermal tiles, thermal expansion is quite meaningless since it cannot retain heat well enough to expand. You can go ahead and get a shuttle tile (Which are available in limited supply online and comes with a statement of authenticity) then set a fire (Or low burning torch) to it and observe the reaction.
No, What is interesting, is Naoko Yamazaki (Who is currently up in STS-131) having a cameo role in episode 7.
Also, just as a side note.... If they simply used the canadaarm, they wouldn't need to strap the spacecraft to the cargo bay.
Just saying. |
