Dec 25 2011 03:49 PM C3 a show with a lot of potential from the first few episodes, yet dwindled as it progressed.
To be perfectly honest, I really enjoyed this show, not so much for the plot, but the dialogue presentation. As a result casting Yukari Tamura as Fear was absolutely priceless after what we have seen her do as Togame in Katanagatari a year ago. The plot remains inconsistent for the most part and lacked a sense of balance. It played a little too much on the fanservice aspect and too little on the action.
Animation wise, it's a show by Silver Link with Shin Oonuma as the chief director of the show. The animation is clearly the strong point of this show with quality very close to that of SHAFT (considering it is essentially a SHAFT spin-off studio of course). Symbolism was strong and the OP/ED animations were gorgeous.
Music wise was okay, though I'm still surprised to see them bring in a second opening 9 episodes into the series, especially when Kirika ended up playing a significantly smaller role than anticipated despite the new sequence focusing heavily on her. Seiyuu, as said before was great with Yukari Tamura and everyone else was really just average. Though I died a little when Yui Ogura was cast as Kuroe. SHE'S SO CUTE!
and it fits Yui Ogura's voice perfectly, especially given her roles (Hinata in Ro-Kyu-Bu! and Alice in Kami-sama no Memo-chou)
Enjoyment? Not something I particularly looked forward to on a regular basis, but definitely an interesting concept. Art was pretty and I always looked forward to more of Fear's screw ups or form of speech.
Overall, C3 is a downplayed work mostly for its visual presentation and its plot. Sure the fanservice was a bit much and the story lacked depth, but when the high points of the series came around, they were usually rather impressive in execution. Not top of the line, but not something that deserves a serious thrashing either. Another problem with Shin Oonuma's titles are that they often lack direction, and it's for a reason (e.g. Bakemonogatari, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Natsu no Arashi!). Unfortunately for C3, the reason is not as apparent, especially given a source material that is significantly more linear than the aforementioned titles. While there are no hints of a sequel (and it seems doubtful at this point), I personally would not mind seeing this continue. The show does a complete 180 2 episodes into the series and while the momentum dissipated I feel as if that momentum could very well return if the series was slightly longer. It seems we were only about to get into the main story...
