Jan 10 2012 11:47 AM So Un-Go is another mystery show which brings detective stories this year to at least a count of 5 (Dantalian no Shoka, Kami-sama no Memo-chou, GOSICK). Unlike the other titles however, Un-Go is effectively an original work with no source material to work off of. However, being an original work alone doesn't make the show good. The reason why Un-Go fails to deliver is its poor stories. While a few of the beginning ones were one-shots and the last 2 stories were 3 episodes a piece, the show ultimately lived up to its name of a story of a "Defeated Detective." To be honest, all the crimes except the last one were easier than those solved in Kami-sama no Memo-chou. What's worse is that Yuuki had to "use" Inga to effectively solve/explain his rationale...and if you hadn't figured it out yet, Inga is a monster who can force people to reveal truths through a simple question. If anything, the setting of the story was interesting, but that's really it and the show refused to not only capitalize on it but also effectively discarded the post apocalyptic setting. Lastly, the worse part of this show was that they had to ruin the final arc (mind you the only good arc) with Inga and Bettenou duking it out as monsters in a flashy "No. 6" style.
Animation wise it didn't feel like your standard Noitamina title (seems like the trend this past season with Guilty Crown being the obvious other title). However, it wasn't horrible per say, which I guess you could call "as expected of BONES." Art, however, felt cheap except in the OP/ED sequences.
Music was good for the OP but not so much for the ED (really can't stand LAMA songs). Background music was okay except for one guitar tune that made it sound like my computer was about to break down. Seiyuu was okay. Interesting to see Aki Toyosaki take on the role of Inga though, especially in the "male form."
Enjoyment? I was bored for the most part to be honest except the last mystery. But it's not like the other mysteries were bad...it's just that having seen the trick done over and over it's easy to figure out the "culprit." Kazamori was really the highlight for making me want to continue watching though. Awesome R.A.I
Overall, Un-Go is an okay watch if you're tired of "loli"-like detectives from this past year but it's not particularly good either. Personally, I preferred Shinrei Tantei Yakumo (Fall 2010) over this. As I said before, the setting in Un-Go is great but it lacks anything substantial to keep one's interest as it fails to fully utilize the post apocalyptic world.
Preliminary Score: 7/10
Final Score: 6/10
