Medaka Box Abnormal is yet another sequel this past anime season. It is the direct continuation of Spring 2012's Medaka Box. As it is a direct sequel, this will be more of a follow-up review. Medaka Box Abnormal premiered during the Fall 2012 anime season and like its prequel, it was simulcasted by CrunchyRoll and licensed by Sentai Filmworks. You can find a review of the first series here.

Medaka Box Abnormal is a direct follow up to its prequel and unlike its predecessor, it jumps right into the next arc's action. Rather than dawdling on member gathering or mindless Medaka fanservice, the series immediately introduces the next arc's antagonist, i.e. members of Class 13 and the Flask Plan. Story wise, it is much better than the previous series due to more interesting action as well as who Medaka and the members of class 13 really are. The plot does seem to take shortcuts in the middle of the series where it only fights/introduces a handful of the Class 13 members along with a number of deus ex moments. However it is also nice to see a number of returning antagonists (i.e. Team Loser) and that the show doesn't just discard them after one use. The biggest highlight of course is the entry of Good Loser Kumagawa, which I'm sure many manga fans have been anticipating since the beginning of season 2 when he was shown in the OP video sequence. The final episode leaves a nice cliffhanger for a potential sequel given the introduction of Kumagawa, which if some of you may recall is Medaka's worst "rival."

Art has generally remained the same from season 1 but animation wise has improved dramatically. The show finally shows what GAINAX has always been capable of, particularly in all the fights. It's probably the best animation work I've seen from GAINAX since Gurren Lagann.

OP is fantastic this time by Minami Kuribayashi and arguably one of this season's better anime themes. ED is also another step up as well from last season; this time by Aki Misato instead of Aki Toyosaki. Background music remains average while sound effects are very good. Seiyuu is the same as before.

Enjoyment? It's a fantastic show if you're blowing through it in one go given the rapid build up and execution. In terms of week by week, it occasionally leaves some cliffhanger, but if you've read the manga, there really are no surprises given how close the anime follows the source.

Overall, Medaka Box Abnormal is a solid follow up. While Kumagawa only appeared for really only one episode, the finale leaves significant opportunity for the series to continue as events are mostly uphill from here. The show, however, remains non groundbreaking and will likely only be enjoyed by Nisio Isin fans. It's got a few ridiculous moments at times but that alone isn't enough to make a true mainstream shounen title. It tries to be unconventional but at the same time it continues to fall in the same traps that conventional titles do.

Preliminary Score: 7/10
Final Score: 7/10

I finished off season 2, episode 11 finishing with the battle between Medaka and Ouda and finally the debut of Kumagawa (the best bad-ass of the series) and episode 12 doing a story from the Good Loser Kumagawa, which I'm not actually familiar with, I questioned whether it was anime-only but since there's a new novel by Nisio called "Medaka Box Gaiden - Good Loser Kumagawa Novel Version", maybe it's not the case because it does talk about Aki Jakago being "destroyed" and "screwed" by Kumagawa. I'm also super glad to see Najimi Ajimu, she's another one of my favourite characters from the Medaka Box universe and I won't talk about what's happened to her in the manga .

The last episode of season 2 sorta had a more "unique" Gainax feel to it, in the sense, I only recall GAINAX doing these sort of breaking the wall things as well as sorta foreshadowing that there might not be anymore Medaka Box anime, which I hope isn't the case.

I personally want a 3rd season and very soon too, there's enough material for it too.

Season 2 was pretty intense from the get-go compared to the slow build-up in the first season. The anime as always is following the manga pretty closely.

Hence, my score for Medaka Box Abnormal is 9/10.

The 2nd season is so much better than the first season, I can't really give all the praise to GAINAX because really this change in pace was instigated by the mangaka of M-Box. I would say we are half-way through of the manga for M-Box or less, I reckon GAINAX can make 2 more seasons for Medaka Box and I hope they do, since they are following the manga pretty closely and the flashbacks to Kumagawa, they are already hinting that a 3rd season is most likely on it's way, my guess it would be this Spring, well I hope so.

Can't wait for episode 11.

I just watched the first season, I was surprised that it really wasn't ecchi at all.

The first half of season 1 was slow and kinda boring, in general, I didn't really like Medaka's character at all. However, the 2nd half of the season stepped up a gear and proceeded to be decent. Even the last episode, despite the whole Unzen Vs Medaka battle being over and it being about a day without troublemaker Medaka at the Student Council Office was refreshing, I know the genius Shogi girl wasn't made president but I hope she ends up becoming one because I know the little girl who was holding her head (the current President) wants her to be president but be slightly relaxed and not so demanding of the beginners....well, that's what I hope ideally because it does seem wrong when a weaker person has more control over the stronger player in the club, all she has to do is be a bit lenient.

Anyways, I really enjoyed the 2nd half but the 1st half was slow.

My rating for the first season is 8/10, I'm hoping the 2nd season is even better.

Oh the TV version wasn't really overly censored at all if you ask me. So there's no worry about waiting on the DVD/BluRay rips. I only say this is this is more or less considered your typical Shounen Jump series, since it is from that serialization. :3

Also, I am enjoying how this series is going so far, even though it's GINAX that's doing this seires though.

I just wanted to know if the first season of Medaka Box TV-rips wer heavily censored or not?

I really want to watch this series but I'm holding back a little if I can watch the Blu-Ray rips instead, I don't care for file-size, I just care for quality and not overwhelming amount of censoring.....I'm wondering because this show probably has a lot of ecchi for fan-service.

Again a great ep with a awesome fight and lots of information about Medaka. Her beeing able to turn her reflexes on and off and to override her bodys safety functions is really something else.
Takachiho beeing the strongest of them really isnt a surprise given his reflexes because thats the most important for a fighter and overpowering them is no easy task. Even Medaka had to give her all against him, even so much that her body was on the verge of giving in.

Zenkichi already found out what the flask plan is, or better how it works (but I guess he hasnt fully realized it yet). The chairman took in people who are great in one special thing and through the combination of all those highlvl-specs he wants to create the perfect beeing who is the strongest and best in everything.

So after someone who fights on autopilot the next one will be a cold blooded mass murderer. Im looking forward to how our human loving Medaka will overcome him.

This show was more fun when it was about solving crazy student council problems. Now that it's just a shonen super power battle show, with training sessions, power-ups, and ten-minute speeches before two seconds of action, it's basically turned to crap.

This show really is raking up the awesome-level every ep.

The Flask labor really is like a RPG-Game. Riddles, mazes, different ways to approach problems and endbosses.
I cant believe Zenkichi didnt get the hint Medaka gave him even though it was so obvious.
It was time that Kikajima and Akune joined them and I hope this time they wont be as useless as last ep but I really wonder if they will be able to hold themselves against the 13 Party. Well after the battle against Unzen Im sure those two have improved too.

I really wouldve wanted to see the date between Medaka and Kikajima. Seems like Kikajima got a thing for Medaka after their kiss at the pool. Well its not a surprise seeing as her partner was Medaka ^^
Btw, regardless what Medaka wears or what hairstyle she has she always looks too damn hot. There are not many anime women, if even any, who can do that.

Prety much he reminds me of Gil from the Fate series. I swear I almost want to call it a Gillgamesh Complex here.
I mean he prety much noticed how strong she was and decided to marry her outright all becuase she was fiesty. Oh by what I just said it can go with either Saber and Gil and Oudo with Medaka.
