Question on your review (I don't disagree with it, the series is the epitome of Tastes like Diabetes to me), but wasn't this series meant as a companion/sidestory to the PSP game, and not simply an alternative media version of the story?

I haven't played the game but I believe the adaptation was the actual game itself...or at least a portion of it. It has the same characters and set up as portrayed in the anime (i.e. Rick washing ashore, the three girls finding him, Kaguya appearing and not having her memories, etc...) except they took out all the action from it. Rick basically only fought for less than 1/4 of the series when the source is an action and fantasy RPG

I have yet to play the PSP game (Probably never will - Shining isn't Shining if it isn't an S/RPG.), but if the story of the show is meant to skip around game content, and tell sidestories, it probably would be more enjoyable and make more sense if watched after the game.

... Not that I think it would help very much.

Shining Hearts -Shiawase no Pan- is based off the Shining Tears PSP game released in 2010. It is the second Shining anime with the first being Shining Tears x Wind, which has little relation to the Shining Tears and Shining Wind games. Shining Hearts -Shiawase no Pan- premiered during the Spring 2012 anime season. The series did not receive a simulcast nor a US license.

So let’s start with the story…is what I would like to say but as far as I’m concerned, there is no story in this show. While I haven’t played the game for this series, Sega’s Shining franchise in general has never been something I was fond of. The story is almost always a flop for this franchise with a large amount of nonsense thrown together. Shining Hearts -Shiawase no Pan- is no exception with the show effectively being a fantasy slice of life title all the way until the final few episodes when mysterious “aliens from another world” attack and are easily defeated by our amnesic protagonist. Characters are bland, uninteresting, and forgettable, especially for a setting where royalty supposedly oppresses everyone (i.e. they own the land). Bread also supposedly solves everyone’s problems. tl;dr the show involves an amnesic hero from another world who bakes bread until he has to fight again or finds a way to return.

Now, you may be wondering at this point why do I keep putting up with this crap franchise then. In simple terms, the character designs. Tony Taka has always done the work for the Shining franchise and effectively what makes the series at least look reasonably pretty.  The rest of the art, unfortunately, is pretty average. Animation is also nothing to really praise either, especially when coming from I.G. Production, which is the same studio working on Kuroko no Basuke the same season.

OP has a nice tune to it but ultimately forgettable. ED is cute but also easily forgettable. Background music and sound effects are subpar but not terrible. Seiyuu cast is generally average with Kazuya Nakai, Mai Aizawa, and Kanae Itou  really propping up the rest of the cast.

Enjoyment? None to the very bare bones of this series. I really have nothing to say here.

Overall, Shining Hearts -Shiawase no Pan- will be a forgotten show not too long from now and it really shouldn’t be missed. It’s a very poor title with series such as Tears to Tiara, Shukufuku no Campanella, and Ar Tonelico OVA looking like masterpieces when compared to this.

Okay with epsidoe 6 we get introduced to a clumsy foxgirl maid that happens to be good not only in the kitchen but in a fight as well.

I get this feeling that she's only clumsy when she's not trying to do overly much, but when she focuses on something she tends to be okay.

In any case it seems the catgirl is still rather miffed that they did take eveything from the box they've found, but I still tend to think that the explaination they were given was a bit too convient if you ask me. I mean it still feels like the people in the castle are sort of like, "If it's not edible and you pull it from the sea it's now under the ownership of the peoplke in the castle."

Okay so I was right about it being a loli, but to think I was somewhat accruate on the witch portion was kind of odd. Although for her to actually try and make the best ice cream is something I would.... wait scratch that I would expect it from a nice witch in a sense.

Pretty much this had absolutely nothing to do with Rick at all, but I wonder if that loli witch was just a one shot deal or would she wonder back into the story somehow.

Well with the next episode it seems that we now have your typical adventure epsidoe setup, but it looks like we're going to see a very intiguing foxgirl out of all of this.

Still I tend to wonder why I'm actually watching this series sometimes.

So finally the catgirl is introduced into the cast now. For some reaosn seeing her kind of reminds me of Sanada-san from the Princess Valkyrie series though minus the catgirl followers of course.

In any case talk about how the guards in this epsiode were being more along the line of legal bandits here. To think that the only thing we know is that there was a certain item that the doll at Hank's shop wanted. So why do I get this feeling that something bad will happen at the castle over this... eventually.

Next episode I sense a loli nearby, and I want to say she's either going to be a loli witch or a loli vampire. So I thought I should get that one out there now.

My current guess is that Kaguya is some sort of princess/queen (isnt Kaguya even the name of a wellknown japanese princess?) and Rick was her knight (his sword and clothes looked looked expensive) and the one hanging in the dwarves hut could be a mechanical knight Kaguyas.

Because you ask for it... somewhat here's the link for that.. or should I say two of them just to be rather accurate here.

One for Touhou:
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Kaguya_Houraisan

The other for accuracy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Bamboo_Cutter

Besides that might be an accurate idea as well Ossi-san I mean since she did have kind of a very "important" necklace along with her looking somewhat elegant as well. I wouldn't put it past them if they say she's of royalty of some sort.

You know they are really lucky that the one hanging in the dwarves hut did blast the pirates away since those were better equipped like pirates nowadays (Somalia and co). I cant even really believe that are pirates since it makes no sense for pirates to have such ships.

I dont know what you all have. Just because Rick enjoys making bread doesnt make him less manly. Most bakers and pastry chefs are men (in germany at least, including me once) and that doesnt make them any bit less manly. And a guy wielding a sword isnt necessarily manly either. If you want to blame something as to why hes not manly then blame it to the fact hat he a anime character since in the real world he wouldve done those three already (and maybe half of the village seeing as everyone is fawning over his bread).
And you can win a war or a fight with bread, just poison it. Or wait until its hard as stone.

I am not sure if they hid the sword and armor of Rick. Probably he has it on his ship?

I am not sure either, but where is that magnificent sword if not stowed away somewhere, while Rickie-kun recovered? He has amnesia and may not recall at least that we have been shown yet, as to what type of knight he was, and from where, and why he was washed ashore wearing armor. If that's his ship, why was he washed ashore? That does not make sense...did the ship just wash ashore too? Weird...ah well, I ain't gonna fuss since I already know we will be made privy to all the questions some of us may have.

This episode was indeed a bit strange in the second half. Suddenly we have pirates, a dwarf, a strange girl hanging and that pendant. Somehow the series has to rush to get to the adventuring which can be good. Maybe the next episode gets the story rolling. Until now it felt a bit weak and without direction. Amil and Rick as a pair do have my favor. Let's hope that it is not going to change into a romance between Rick and Kaguya That would be so obvious..

About the three girls in the bakery: I am not sure if they hid the sword and armor of Rick. Probably he has it on his ship? As he can't remember anything about his past he hasn't had need for it until now?
