At the beginning of the Edo Era, when people enjoyed a time of peace, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga holds a fighting tournament. In the past, matches were fought with wooden swords. This time, real swords will be used.

One-armed Fujiki Gennosuke and blind Irako Seigen will fight each other in this match. Both are disciples of Iwamoto Kogan, who is known as Japan's greatest swordsman. Each of them are determined to prove himself the successor of Iwamoto's school. However, there can only be one champion.

So begins a story of intertwining fates, conflict, and strange destinies.

I knew this anime recently. I love it.
This anime's story is used to part of historic fact, but almost thing is not truth.

it's kinda difficult to understand the whole story just by watching the anime series. In fact the manga it self have not shown the final fujiki vs irako yet...

just FYI fujiki will have first match with irako that caused his condition before the final match...

and yes i'm impatiently waiting for that final, to bad the writer and the mangaka, having a great time doing story telling of all other character... and i believe it's going to take another 1 year before the final match to be drawn...

I need to watch it again from the beginning it's pretty artistic film. All the imagery of the instects the lighting everything had to do with the story. There were a lot of hints that he was going to lose his arm?, they were so subtle though that you could miss them?.
Or that was just something that happened to him who knows^_- no I don't think the producers would mess something like that up a lot of planning goes into creating an animimation before they start animating.
This is very good example of great story telling, they dont' need to show what happens when they fight because they have already given enough exposition in the story about that fight.(hence he is going to show his secret attack to the emporer) He can't do his secret attack wtih out his left arm(remember how the sensei did it)
Deffinitly will buy it when it comes out out on dvd.
I loved Mononoke too.

StrangeCat, I do not think last two episodes explained how he lost his arm. Unless the producers merely messed up with arms. But he was biting his right hand (if I remember correctly), and also when he took a shower, right hand again it was shown. Meantime, he was without left arm during the duel, so question remains - mistake, or story behind it:)

Yes it is over. I guess you have to watch the anime from the beginning to understand how he loses his arm and why. The last two episodes were really important though.
yes the music is very good job of how to use subtle minilism style japanese music to get the emotions across.
Still I would have composed a few melodies with Koto Harp, bells, and Tranverse flute. But it deffinitly worked!
Great Series! Was fun and beautiful to watch, I like who the images, the lighting and even the music was all part of telling the story.

Almost watched all 12 episodes in one go. That's a compliment. Sound effects/Musical score was brilliant. A LOT of detailed graphical violence, some of the scenes were disturbing as hell. They really went all out on that department . Got to give credit to people that go outside the mainstream and produce series like these to satisfy a smaller select audience. It's definitely not for everyone, even among those old enough .

Anyways I came here trying to find out if I missed something along the way. Because I wondered too, how did he lose his arm. This isn't over, is it ?

Must be, I think they need like 2 more regular episodes to finish so maybe a double length special or something.
