In the year 2059 AD, the human race has overcome the crisis of imminent extinction resulting from the inter-planetary war against giant aliens. Now, emphasizing species preservation, they set out for the far corners of the Galaxy to find new frontiers.

In Macross Frontier, the 25th space fleet, used for very long distance emigration, ferries more than 10 million people living mainly in the New Joint Forces’ battleship that is combined with a residential ship. The spaceship, having an artificial environment not different from that of the Earth, is traveling near the center of the Galaxy.

One day, an idol singer named Sheryl Nome, born in Macross Galaxy, another emigrant fleet near by, visits Macross Frontier to hold a concert. She is a proud top idol, and her songs are always high up on the Galaxy Network hit charts.

There is a girl who wishes to be like a Sheryl. Her name is Ranka Lee. She is an ordinary high school student works part-time at a Chinese restaurant. Her elder brother, Ozma, is her only family. He is an ace pilot and the head of the Valkyrie Special Forces Squad, SMS. Because he loves his sister very much, he keeps it secret that he is a pilot of a dangerous fighter.

When Ranka attends Sheryl’s long-awaited concert, she meets a high school student, Saotome Alto, who is in flight school. It is supposed to be a common meeting….

Meanwhile, Frontier encounters unknown enemies. They aren’t Earthians or aliens, but unknown space creatures. The ships of the fleet are damaged one by one. The creatures’ power is so strong that they brush aside VF squads and break through to the residential areas. To sweep them out, VF-25 squad, lead by Ozuma, is dispatched. How many are they? What abilities do they have? What is their purpose?

So the second movie is out subbed and just like the first it was great. More than just great.

Even though the whole story and a few characters changed (Leon beeing the father of Luca instead of the lover of Catherine, Gracia beeing controlled instead of doing it on her own, Mikael surviving, Alto vanishing and saying who he chooses) compared to the series it still had the main themes of Macross Frontier, that beeing the music, the love-triangle and galaxys plot to contrl the Vajyra. This time around you even see the three Galaxy-Masterminds.
The SMS-Flagship surfing was a nice idea, but didnt really fit in. Overall there were a few scenes I cant remember anymore that didnt really fit in.
The other point I didnt like was the ending. Sure Alto finally choosing someone was great even though it was the wrong choice in my eyes (you dont deserve Sheryl, Alto!). But I dont see the point to him vanishing with the Vajyra Queen, especially since there is no third movie planned as far as I know. It remembered me a lot of the ending of the Gundam 00 movie where the end wasnt really great either.

Music was mostly great, but as in the series most of Rankas songs werent my taste. I really had to laugh seeing the prisoners loving that kind of movies. They probably were imprisoned for not beeing manly enough.

A big surprise is that Sheryl knew the whole time what was going on instead of beeing only manipulated by Grace, who, this time, was the one beeing manipulated.

Like I already said a great movie and two-part-movie-series.
10/10 from me.

I know that there is a a second movie coming in which Gracia could be seen on either the good or the bad side, but for now I cant say on which side she is. After all the whole story changed so that could change too.
And the teleconference is only showing that she has a need for both Sheryls and Ranks singing on orders of Galaxy. That could really be to save both Frontier and Galaxy and plotting something doesnt necessarily have to be something evil.

But of course the chances are high that that stays the same. Guess we will see in the next movie.

Funny, I thought Gracia revealed her evilness a little too quickly in the movie. I mean she hid it from the others, but the nude teleconference made it pretty clear that she had a fairly nefarious agenda. But that's par for the course with them having less time to tell the story.

I thought the movie was awesome and I blogged about it if you care to read the rest of my thoughts.

So finally was able to watch the movie. At first I really hoped it would be a continuation but this retelling was really great.

You cant really say its a retelling since its almost completely different from the series. The only thing left are the characters, but even they have changed, since Gracia doesnt seem to be evil this time. Biggest surprise for me, except Mikhail surviving, is that Macross Galaxy isnt the final boss. Ok that all can change of course since there is a second part to the movie which Im really looking forward to.

The disadvantage of the movie compared to the series is of course that it couldnt get that deep into the characters, their background and the minor storys like the relations between Alto, Sheryl and Ranka.

But alone seeing Sheryl again with her hot dresses and her really great hair was worth watching the movie.

9/10 from me which can be a 10/10 later if the second movie is as great as this one.

umm killer_ossi

this was just the 1st of 2 Macross frontier Movies. the 2nd will have Gracia showing her true colors and all.

So I had no idea there was going to be a return of epic space mech battles and Moe Incarnate! I stumbled upon a Macross Frontier movie, "The False Songstress"... gave it a whirl and felt it was quite the pleasant watch. Its actually an alternate retelling, two-part movie, with a lot of the plot changed and altered around. There were a few recycled scenes but plenty of original content. The only thing that bothered me was the somewhat cheesy portion of the climax "I can still sing!" , but I guess that's to be expected with Macross.

Oh, and the Mikhail fangirls cried out in terror once again only to get trolled hard by the producers.  HILARIOUS!  I can just see the reaction on some people's faces during that scene.

Not sure how many people know about this, but the the most recent Vocaloid Megpoid- GUMI is voiced by Nakajima Megumi.

You can check out the vocal rendition of the software here (p.s. the videos are not part of the software):

I agree with you 100% on this.  I just watched those and it looks like it took Megumi a while to get in the swing of things.  I thought she looked tense during that whole part 1 section accipeter posted, but after that it seemed fine.

Of course its all subjective, and my bias was towards Megumi to begin with.  There's somthing about May'n's voice that grates at my nerves, not sure what it is though.

Edit:  I didn't see Lion anywhere on there.  Did they not do it?  Kinda dissapointing, one of my favorite songs in the series.

May'n has the same Aya Hirano type voice which somewhat vibrates, just not as bad. See the God Knows performance by her at a live concert. It was god awful.
For Nakajima, it was actually her first big performance so it's actually expected that she would be that nervous. May'n has actually been in the music industry since I believe 12 or 14 years old.

Lion is included in the Encore part of the concert. It was not part of the main lineup aside from being in the Nyan Nyan Service Medley.

The next thing I'm currently waiting for are the Macross Crossover Concert that just occurred about 2 weeks ago, the Maaya Sakamoto 30th birthday concert in Budokan on March 31, 2010, and May'n 20th birthday concert in Budokan on January 24, 2010. I wonder if they'll do one for Nakajima since she's had a lot of good songs lately from the likes of Basquash and Kobato.

The big one out of the three I'm waiting for is the Macross crossover concert to be released since that one brings the original Macross, Macross 7 and Macross Frontier all together in one concert and being able to hear more Lynn Minmay/Mari Iijima is definitely a plus since a couple of Ranka's/Nakajima's songs are based off her's.
