The anime was originally planned as an adaptation of Asakiyumemishi - The Tale of Genji, Waki Yamato's shōjo manga retelling of the novel. However, Dezaki decided that he wanted to bypass the manga version, and write and direct a more direct interpretation of the original novel itself. The anime will celebrate the thousand-year anniversary of the original novel, although the exact date of its writing is unknown.

Alternative Titles: * The Tale of Genji * 源氏物語千年紀 Genji

If you read the Wikipedia article about the Tale of Genji (which is apparently an early Japanese classic), it's clear that there is no clear overarching plot. It merely follows the life of Genji -- a serial drama about a gorgeous, womanizing, yet sensitive noble in the Japanese court written for the female aristocracy of its time.

After the point at which the anime ended,
QUOTE (Wikipedia)
Genji is thus exiled to the town of Suma in rural Harima province (now part of Kobe in Hyōgo Prefecture). There, a prosperous man from Akashi in Settsu province (known as the Akashi Novice) entertains Genji, and Genji has a love affair with Akashi's daughter. She gives birth to a daughter. Genji's sole daughter later becomes the Empress.

In the Capital, the Emperor is troubled by dreams of his late father and something begins to affect his eyes. Meanwhile, his mother grows ill, which weakens her powerful sway over the throne. Thus the Emperor orders Genji pardoned, and he returns to Kyoto. His son by Lady Fujitsubo becomes the emperor and Genji finishes his imperial career. The new Emperor Reizei knows Genji is his real father, and raises Genji's rank to the highest possible.

However, when Genji turns 40 years old, his life begins to decline. His political status does not change, but his love and emotional life are slowly damaged. He marries another wife, the "Third Princess" (known as Onna san no miya in the Seidensticker version, or Nyōsan in Waley's). She bears the son of Genji's nephew later ("Kaoru"). Genji's new marriage changes the relationship between him and Murasaki, who now wishes to become a nun.

Genji's beloved Murasaki dies. In the following chapter, Maboroshi ("Illusion"), Genji contemplates how fleeting life is. Immediately after Maboroshi, there is a chapter entitled Kumogakure ("Vanished into the Clouds") which is left blank, but implies the death of Genji.

The rest of the work is known as the "Uji Chapters". These chapters follow Niou and Kaoru, who are best friends. Niou is an imperial prince, the son of Genji's daughter, the current Empress now that Reizei has abdicated the throne, while Kaoru is known to the world as Genji's son but is in fact fathered by Genji's nephew. The chapters involve Kaoru and Niou's rivalry over several daughters of an imperial prince who lives in Uji, a place some distance away from the capital. The tale ends abruptly, with Kaoru wondering if the lady he loves is being hidden away by Niou. Kaoru has sometimes been called the first anti-hero in literature.[9]

I can sort of understand why the people behind the anime decided to tie things off here; the rest doesn't sound like it would be particularly satisfying, and a happily ever after with Murasaki would be contrary to the spirit of the story.

Last episode - suspension?! I don't get the ending....? What exactly lies ahead for Prince Genji in Suma? Did he died and reunited with Lady Fujitsubo in their afterlife?

Ah...this one was bittersweet and our man-about-the Imperial-Court, Prince Genji wept a tad, over the late wife's demise, and off he was again, bedding the old rival, who I think, did the beautiful Lady Aoi in. I mean, gee, it was like she has a double personality or something, as she battled, "herself" in the woods. Well, I think Prince Genji's "generosity" will be greatly tested, once the little Hime, who lives in his mansion, grows up a bit more. Still a beautiful one as far as the art work and use of color go.

While that may be true...who knows how much the Shining Prince's papa really knows. I cannot believe that he can move about the Imperial court with such ease, seducing and bedding the ladies who are willing, and still not be caught in the act. I mean, is he that spoiled and does papa indulge him that much, that it is overlooked? What of a possible bitter-ended affair...could she snitch on him without compromising herself? All remains to be seen...onward then to episode 6.

Heh, there is more than that going on. Genji has moved from seducing his father's wives to seducing his older brother's wives.  I was never aware that the imperial court in the 11th century was so rife with adultery and such.  The most amazing part is, given his rank, Genji should be executed already.  He has made several powerful enemies already and is make more in the heir apparent.  Such a care free life he seems to lead.
