The store shelf didn't fall all the way if you'd look. it caught itself on another shelf forming a small wedge of space. The clerk was closer to the more open part of the space. However Yuuki was closer to the bottom more narrow part of the space. The shelf had squeezed onto Yuuki. He could probably still breath and talk, as we saw in episode 2, but the weight of the shelf on his Chest more than likely caused some internal injuries.

You are probably right becauss I do remember the crush syndrome but I never connected to Yuuki.....I thought the store clerk was protecting him from getting crushed by the shelf.

He died from trauma to his head

NO NO NO NO NO!!!! Why do people CONSTANTLY make this assumption that he had head trauma!? It was not from head trauma. He died from internal bleeding caused from crush syndrome. In episode two we find Yuuki trapped under a heavy store shelf ON HIS CHEST! Since he was found rather quickly his internal injuries began to heal. but when the tower fell and he saved his sister he aggravated those injuries further. This time they didn't heal. A slow internal bleed can cause VOMITING, LOSS OF APPETITE, Loss of color in the face, blurry vision, fevers, fainting spells, and sever headaches caused when not enough O2 is reaching the brain.

head trauma like you're describing would include some of these symptoms yes but would also have, loss of motor control, slurred speech with in in a couple of hours after the injury, and loss of body control such as urinating and crapping oneself. all of which Yuuki did NOT show signs of.

Another big clue that proves he died due to complications due to crush syndrome is that the reporter mentions crush syndrome in one of her previews.

I've watched 5 episodes so far and Shini don't worry I didn't click the spoiler........I don't tend to anyways and that is why I appreciate that you put in a spoiler tag. Thank you.

Episode 05.....when hearing Mr. Furuichi's grandchildren coming from the countryside and dying in the earthquake and most of the events in this episode.....I had tears in my eyes....I had it when it seemed like Yuuki died saving his sister in episode 04 I think. This series is incredibly emotional..........man I've heard frm my less enthusiastic friends that anime is apparently "unable" to protray emotion.......what a load of bullsh*t. I guess its because they just haven't seen enough anime.

EDIT #1:

I've watched 2 episodes since I posted this and its just past 1am over here....so I'm gonna head over to bed now and finish this wonderful series tomorrow. Yuuki has fainted....I hope he will be well. :rolleyes (I'm up to episode 07 atm).

EDIT #2:

I just watched episodes 8 to 11......I was shocked and damn this series was very realistic as well as emotional. I cried twice on the last episode.

Shini, I adored the animation and the character development. Mirai, Yuuki and Mari where one of the best anime trios.......ahhhhhh that was sooo sad about Yuuki and Mirai having illusions that he as alive or shall say that she was able to see his spirit until she was able to get back with her mother. I also loved the text message Yuuki sent using Mari's phone to Mirai......it was a very enpowering scene. I was really glad that Mira's family were all okay.......I felt sad for her when she thought the unknown dead bodies were her remaining family.

It is a very bittersweet series and I loved the ending........."Mirai resolves to move on with her life, knowing that Yuuki will always be in her heart". The quoted line is from WIKI and pretty much sums up the end of the series giving it some kind of happy closure. I watched the ED, as the pics used in it are different as it shows how everyone has moved on with their lives but Mirai's family still keep Yuuki's shoes at the entrance as another memory of him.....it was the last picture in the ED for the final episode.

Overall this series is very unique and a masterpiece in its own right. Hence, I'm giving this enchanting series 10/10.

EDIT #3:

Hmmmm....it seems like you guys had no idea why Yuuki died. He died from trauma to his head when he saved his sister during the collapse of Tokyo Tower. He was in pain but was strong enough to walk forward for both his sister's and Mari's sake. If he had treated it earlier, Yuuki would still be alive........it just shows how strong and brave a 8 year old boy can have. There are references to this when Mirai talks about the pain to his head that Yuuki was suffering but he kept it under the cover and suffered silently. The kid was being stubborn.........reminds me of Kamina of TTGL in some ways.

I really liked this anime too JCD. There wasnt really much discussion surrounding this anime and one cause could be if i remember correctly the server that was hosting it for FTV went down for some time while it was airing.
Another could be the facts were all pretty obvious (yuuki's death being the only one that wasnt) and with people all using facts to discuss recently there wasnt any argument surrounding those "facts".

Meh or it could be that this was like so totally awesome that there was a mutual silence in respect.. its a longshot i know.. XD

What did you like most about it Jcd?

Edit never mind and DO NOT read the spoiler JC. just noticed that you've only seen one episode so far Xd.
