Dec 24 2010 02:44 AM Finally got around to finishing the last episode. It's been sitting on my hard drive for about 2 months now
Anyways, the last episode was good. I found it amusing how the "ending theme" was actually placed in the middle of the show almost as if it was a troll. I also really liked how the second half of the episode was a recap and at the same time not a recap.
Unfortunately, the show itself was nowhere near perfect. Seitokai Yakuindomo focuses a lot on sex, ecchi, and other perverted jokes through various approaches. While essentially every mini-scene or piece of dialogue would always end with some sort of reference, I felt that they were trying too hard at times to come up with a new joke. In addition, and as stated in my preliminary review, it made a portion of the show really boring since one could usually deduce what was the joke they were attempting to make. However, I must give it credit for coming up with a few slapstick moments that they seemed a bit out of the blue or unexpected.
The animation quality is quite pretty for this show. While nowhere near the level of say Satelight, Kyoto Animation, or SHAFT, it was definitely great in its own right, especially coming from a lesser known studio. In my preliminary review I mentioned the character faces irked me in the first episode. I will say that they got better as the series went on and proportions were drawn properly. I guess they just goofed in the first episode and I sure hope they went to fix that when releasing the blu-ray/DVD. Either that or I just didn't notice it any more after the first episode since I got use to it.
The music wasn't great unfortunately. The OP was decent at best and the ED, although by angela, didn't really grow on me as I had hoped it would have. Although faster than "Alternative" (from Asura Cryin' 2), there was no solid rhythm to it. The seiyuus were pretty decent for this show, though I did feel that Takatoshi's seiyuu (Shintaro Asanuma) didn't really bring out his true colors for this show in contrast to the role he played as Watashi in Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (Tatami Galaxy), which aired a season earlier than Seitokai Yakuindomo. I had a similar feeling coming from Shino's seiyuu (Yoko Hikasa) initially, but that's more likely because I'm biased from Yoko voicing Mio in K-ON! and Maya in Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin in the same season.
As for character development....there was some, but they didn't really dwell on Shino's all that much compared to the other three members of the student council. We got to see her fellow student council member's family and the world they live around, but unless I missed something, we didn't really get to see anything from Shino's family. Even without that development, the rest of the cast's background was pretty shallow. Of course, this is rather expected for a slapstick comedy show. However, since they began digging in that area, I was kinda hoping they would dig deeper.
Enjoyment? Relative to the other shows airing during that season, I will admit that I got bored with this show, and hence why it got put off. While the final episode did redeem the show a bit of it's quality, it's not as good as what I got from a first impression of the show. Considering K-ON! and Mitsudomoe were airing the same season and that I was getting more laughs out of that those shows, I'm pretty sure it's obvious where this show stood on the priority list.
Overall, the primary problem with this show was repetitiveness. While I enjoyed the show's 4koma-like "plot advancement" as I said numerous times before the sex jokes became not only anticipated but obvious. The other recent Seitokai show, Seitokai no Ichizon, trumps Seitokai Yakuindomo easily. This might be because of the larger amount of material available to make jokes out of and thus my primary fear in the upcoming Hen Zemi TV adaptation is the exact same one I have coming from Seitokai Yakuindomo. To be honest, there's really only so many erotic jokes you can crack before it becomes obvious or old, especially if a character's personality is not expected to change throughout the show, while on the other hand, anime parody shows know no bounds. The downside to the latter is simply not knowing what show it comes from similar to how not knowing Japanese cultural reference to understand Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Nonetheless, that can easily be remedied while the number of erotic jokes cannot as over time, it will simply become dull.
