Mar 28 2011 01:26 AM Ah yes, Mitsudomoe 2. After such a great first season, I really looked forward to the sequel. While I have yet to watch the Mitsudomoe special, I'll provide my 2 cents on the second season.
So the second season starts off on a low note: a Gachi Ranger special. While certainly entertaining, for a show that was only going to have 8 episodes it felt like huge waste. I have not read he manga for this series but considering there were only 8 episodes I assume that it was nearly caught up with it. Based on the finale as well, it does not seem like there will be any future adaptation, or at least not in the near future.
As for the "plot" of this show, while a comedy, the biggest thing that bothered me in the sequel was how it jumped around. The show felt very much like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei where timelines don't matter anymore. If I recall correctly, we had a sports festival, a new years/Christmas episode at least twice in both the first and second series combined. As a result, it raises the question as to why are the triplets still in 6th grade? The lack of consistency bugged me to no end and while I don't expect a clear cut direction for this show, I at least expected a consistent timeline. Bridge is no Shaft and Masahiko Oota is certainly no Akiyuki Shinbou so it's difficult for me to come to terms with the sequel being a good show when the content is scattered. The humor was certainly as solid as the first season and definitely less disgusting for the most part, but the humor didn't flow or connect as well as it did in the first season where each episode at least followed up with one another in some way, shape, or form.
Music wise, I actually enjoyed the first season's more in terms of OP/ED, but otherwise nothing special. Character development was also rather lacking as the jokes continued to focus on the same thing over and over again this time around, particularly Mitsuba and her fat.
Overall, Mitsudomoe 2 is as enjoyable as its prequel. It was a show I had extremely high hopes for and possibly being the show of the season (until Madoka, Kimi ni Todoke 2, and Gosick were announced for the same season that is). However, it lacks a solid foundation to be deemed as the same "quality." There was unnecessary filler and too much repetition, and again, a lack of continuity.
Preliminary Score: 7/10 Final Score: 7/10
