Jan 4 2011 11:56 PM And here I thought/keep hearing that Fortune Arterial is bad. While I have not finished Fortune Arterial, I can conclude that Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls is bad. Most of the series is spent on fillers and fanservice. In addition, while the black and white style for the for the latter of the final episode is an interesting touch, it was really hard to follow some of the sequences. Not to mention that the flow of the story in the finale was clearly rushed and barely finishing within the designated time. To be honest, they needed at least another episode or two to properly conclude and that could have easily been done by removing some of the earlier episodes.
In essence, Hyakka Ryouran had no proper conclusion and even if it did, there was no clear cut plot until about 2/3 of the way through the show. Even then it was rather blurry as we never really saw who Amakusa actually is.
The animation quality is unexpectedly poor. While the style is definitely a unique touch, it may very well be due to the ink blots that makes the animation seem cheap. In fact, coming from Arms I've seen better considering they did the recent Queen's Blade series. Other than that, Arms has never actually done anything spectacular overall so I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised either.
Music was pretty poor coming from Faylan (see Seikon no Qwaser, Regios, or Milky Holmes for better stuff). ED sequence is cute but the ED theme itself is not so spectacular as expected. Even with Minako Kotobuki on the team, Aoi Yuuki and Rie Kugimiya simply put more weight on the negative aspects.
Character development = 0. No question. Most of it was meaningless fanservice and the fact that there was no plot basically meant no character to develop anyways. Sen's and Muneakira's past together lacked development, and the heck who Jyuubei and Amakusa was also lacking.
Enjoyment really lied in Jyuubei's "non-master samurai" side since she is a complete airhead. While it tends to create the typical harem anime misunderstandings when Yukimura and Sen are around, I guess you could say it's Jyuubei's moe appeal that was made things interesting.
Overall, Muneakira was a worthless character. You could have easily done this show without the harem aspect since the final episode was really Muneakira yelling Jyuubei's name a hundred times and a bunch of "pew pew" flashy and power-up effects in black and white. To be honest, I had some hope at the end of the first episode with the awesome side of Jyuubei showing up, but that really was thrown to waste.
Preliminary Score: 6/10
Final Score: 4/10 Edit: Finished Fortune Arterial...Fortune Arterial is definitely better than this show.
