Jan 15 2011 05:09 PM Having finished Panty and Stocking, I've confirmed that GAINAX is on crack when making this show.
Overall, the show is not as impressive as people have said it is. It definitely has various moments it shines, but after digging deep enough and with the exception of the last 2 episodes, the entire series is simply the same things over and over again. The last two episodes of the series is really all that needs to be said about the show. The main "plot" of the series as well as any additional plot twists and action as necessary.
The finale was indeed a wtf moment as people have claimed throughout essentially the entire episode. From the huge cannon accidentally shot at heaven to Stocking's supposed betrayal.
The animation style is on a whole new level by GAINAX, most notably in episode 6, which was the first episode to be action-heavy. Barring the recent Evangelion movies, this is the first work from GAINAX probably since Gurren Lagann that was at least decent and noteworthy in terms of both animation and art quality as well as creativity.
The soundtrack, I admit is very impressive for this show and am quite shocked by it. Seiyuu wise, I was actually hoping Panty would be voiced by Revy from Black Lagoon but surprisingly she wasn't despite the incredibly large amount of similarities in attitude. Stocking by Mariya Ise was actually a rather interesting touch though.
Enjoyment? Well I can't say I was bored, but the show had the same problem as the recent Seitokai Yakuindomo. Most events were expected in the first half of the series, and even after the awesome events of episode 6 and up until about episode 11, the show dragged with the same old jokes pulled in the first half of the series.
Whether or not a second season has been officially confirmed remains a mystery but if they do make one at least it will be interesting, or so I hope now that Stocking is actually an antagonist (or one of those "to fool the enemy you need to fool your friends first"). Overall, the show was definitely unique in its own right, and if you ask me, it's a shown that fits a more western audience's taste. Whether or not companies like Funimation will actually obtain a license and market it is another issue since some of the content is occasionally questionable given today's society.
