Tetsuko no Tabi is an anime based upon the real life hobby of Hirohiko Yokomi, a travel writer in Japan who has visited every train station in Japan over the past 15 or so years. He has visited almost 10,000 train stations, including big city stations, suburban commuter stops, and even rural platforms in the middle of nowhere. Several years ago, Yokomi arranged to have a manga-ka, Naoe Kikuchi, travel along with him so that she could illustrate a manga based upon his travels and writings.

In this episode I loved the bit about the bento box. Yokomi not caring about the food, only the art on the box itself. Also how crappier stations are graded higher. You know your dealing with hardcore antique fanatics when patination is one of the most sought after qualities. I love his voice, btw. It just perfectly conveys that crazy enthusiasm.

Another neat thing is that they went through the Fukushima Aizu Wakamatsu station twice, which is semi-famous on 4chan where they have "train-kun" threads watching the streaming live-cam from the station:

By the way, my cousin's husband is an American train Otaku. He goes out a photographs trains and travels to see interesting rail related features and stuff. When they visited Vermont a couple of summers ago I told him about a wooden covered bridge train trestle nearby and he immediately went racing over there to take pictures of it. I'm going to have to tell him about this show when it is done.

QUOTE (nijlandp @ Oct 11 2011, 12:07 PM) I wasn't sure about this series when i saw the first episode a long time ago. After watching this "new" subbed release i do hope that they will continue. It ain't a bad series just somewhat strange and slow.
It is fun though and different and something I would love to do, especially in Japon.  I am amused at how eccentric some folks are and that any story can be pretty much made into anime these days...so train otakus do exist after all...funny. Glad to see frostii still at work despite how slow they are...

You are right. We can get the strangest things. Being a train otaku ain't so bad since you get around a lot I do hope that frostii will finish this series as it is indeed fun to watch. And it is better then some of the series of this season.

I am amused at how eccentric some folks are (and really annoying too, like Yokomi is...I had to mute the sound as I could not stand his voice) and that any story can be pretty much made into anime these days...so train otakus do exist after all...funny. Glad to see frostii still at work despite how slow they are... A good thing though since this one can be a difficult watch at times.

Yeah, I noticed that said-group brought this anime back out of the "forgotten-anime" grave and I was thankful of them in their comment sections back at their website. However, I think I'll wait till all the episodes are subbed and released.

Wow...was a walk down memory lane to see once old pals (some I still keep in touch with) posting here. Next time I talk to DSL, I will remind her she was once gracing this thread. Anyway, episode three was fun. Loved how the gang handled all of those stairs while taking in the sites and whatnot. I actually think it would be loads of fun to travel like that not necessarily for the trains but for the views and the possibility of meeting many interesting folks.
A~san, agree with all that you say...I plan to keep watching.

*Magical forum basement thread revival powers ENGAGE!!!*

I was surprised to find a thread for this show. I guess a group did one episode way back but then dropped it. Now another group has picked it up and I've watched the first three episodes. This is not going to be everyone's taste because its not Moe or action packed or anything like that. Its about real people in the real world documenting someone's real obsession with trains in a fairly humorous way. I really enjoy it though because I can identify both with the train Otaku and the Mangaka who was tricked into doing the story. I'm a bird watcher and sometimes when I start going on and on about that stuff to non-birders, I can see their eyes glaze over with that "how can you care so much" look. And I know the other end from having to sit through my Micro-brew fanatic brother go on and on about beer and feeling my own eyes glaze over... Well anyway, this is a pretty fun show if you are willing to watch something outside the norm. And you will really learn a lot about trains and train stations in Japan. If you can sit through it without your eyes glazing over, that is.

Well I guess I'm going to be the first one to send in my report umm not going to say analysis because that would imply there was something substantial to breakdown. I'm not gonna bash non fiction works but I'm leaning towards they might be a bad idea when you are making an anime series. There was just nothing that really made me lol or just in particularly interested me. It was pretty much what you see is what you get. They just went from station to station and made some random attempts at comedy. Probably the climax of the episode is when they ate a "station bento???!!* So I can't say for sure that I will be continuing this series even though it's usually my rule to view at least 3 episodes before dropping. Though there are sometimes exceptions to that and Tetsuko no Tabi is on that borderline extinction list with a big red circle....

I haven't gotten around to checking out this episode yet. I might try and download it either later tonight or tomorrow. I am curious as to whether or not this show will be able to grab me.

Yeah I'm gonna go a head and download this one to for the simple fact that the plot is non-fiction and there seems to be a question here whether or not it's possible for it to be amusing. The disclaimer seemed like a bad idea in general. I bet alot of people aren't going to download it soley for that reason. He must have not taken his advertising classes seriously XD but besides all that he says it's entertaining so we shall see.
