Yeah thats the problem, we get to watch what the japanese want. There are so many great mangas out there which deserve an anime in my eyes but since they arent ecchi we wont get them -.-

I think the issue is that studios are simply animating titles that had one volume make it to a top 10 list without considering when the title will finish or whether previous volumes were good at all (e.g. Kami-sama no Memochou ranked 10th in light novel rankings at one point and almost immediately got an anime adaptation green-lit).

There really should be a production studio for western watchers, too bad I dont have the money for this.

There is one....it's called Funimation's (I think) collaboration with Hollywood....which I don't even want to think about.

It works out somehow....

I must say I never saw Softenni hinting at a real plot, but Im probably immune already to those hints considering there is almost nothing else anymore in animes then only hints of a plot. Or I just ignored it thinking its just comedy.

And for me comedy is just comedy without any subcategories. The only subcategorie I have there is "good comedy" and "bad comedy".

I totally dont get you. You like YuruYuri because of the comedy but not this one? I thought something went wrong in your head after hearing YuruYuri is better than Morita-san wa Mukuchi which is completely impossible, but now Im sure.

Yuru Yuri had better comedy than Softenni in my opinion, though that opinion can easily change between now and the former title's conclusion next month as I haven't been enjoying the recent episodes as of late. Morita-san wa Mukuchi is like watching Double-J though not as bad as far as I'm concerned.

Softenni was hinting at a plot and kept trying to dig into it, but from what I saw, it covered almost no ground in end. Yes, I'm aware it's a comedy, but if the show is going to continuously tease about a plot, at least do it in a way like Seitokai no Ichizon did it (see episode 11) and do it properly. What Softenni did was it inserted a "serious" two-part character back story on Asuna such that it was really hard to swallow given the lack of any seriousness in the prior 10 episodes. The thing is, that's really hard to have it slip by with it saying "accept and move on." As someone who has seen approximately 2000 titles (or more by now maybe), it's difficult for me to see that as a valid justification when reviewing the series as a whole. It's not as bad as a deus ex though.

The major problem with this show is that it was a roller coaster. Bad start, decent middle, mediocre end (despite good character development/back story).

Mitsudomoe and Shinryaku! Ika Musume were the same and still great. And for someone who liked the comedy of Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Season 1 this here should be paradies. After all Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu only has five lame jokes they are doing three times an ep and that was all there is to the series. But maybe good is bad for you and the other way round, than everything would make sense.

Plain comedy does not equal parodies or slapstick comedy. There's a reason why there are those additional subcategories. Mitsudomoe, while on a similar level as Softenni, wasn't all fun and games, it really only redeemed itself in the second half of season 1. Season 2 was a disappointment but worth watching.
Ika Musume is more along the lines of Rozen Maiden comedy (obviously nowhere near the level of Rozen Maiden), which is completely different from that of Softenni.
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu as you said is a parody but at the same time a gag comedy. Softenni is not a gag show.
Also one may have different tolerance levels for comedy/jokes let alone tastes. I tend to have a higher bar for "good comedy" maybe higher than the average viewer and again, my tastes are likely different from yours, hence the huge difference in opinions about this show.

Gave it a 8/10 and hope there will be a second season.

It needs a second season in the sense that the cliffhanger was there but whether or not it deserves one or will get one is another issue. Japan doesn't seem to think highly of the show especially the reaction on 2ch when the finale aired. Not sure about the community outside of that tough.
From the final minute of the show, it doesn't look like it will but it's hard to say nowadays given all the sudden sequels and remakes we're getting.

Btw, if you dont like any of the stuff that airs, shouldnt you stop watching waht airs and maybe watch older stuff or nothing? Or do you have just so much time that you can do stuff you dont like? I wouldnt even if the day had 100 hours.

I've watched a lot of older stuff already. Most of the stuff I often put on hold are due to lack of (decent) subs. There are a number of titles I did indeed miss but I'm gradually plowing through it. And while I don't have much time (or at least it doesn't feel like it) I somehow manage to squeeze anime into my schedule. My only real limitation is hard drive space to store everything.

I found it really enjoyable it had great comedy and interesting charactertraits.

Sure it had no deep plot but for what? Its a comedy. Random eps with no real connection? The same its comedy so there doesnt have to. Mitsudomoe and Shinryaku! Softenni....right...I have no idea what I just watched. From beginning to end I saw a random mess with episodes that felt out of place, particularly the last episode. It was an interesting way to end the show but also not exactly a satisfying one. The show also ended with a lot remaining to be developed/expected.

Animation was pretty solid for a Xebec title, which surprised me quite a bit for this kind of a title with the exception of the tennis court net in the final episode where there was a blank instead of the grid lines, which were drawn.

Seiyuu, nothing particularly notable and none of the music really stood out.

Character was flat until the last two episodes where we learned about Asuna. Other than though, we don't know much about anyone else.

Enjoyment? Really nothing to see here.

Overall, one is not missing much from this show. Fanservice aside, the comedy value was pretty flat for the most part. Good from time to time, but nothing noteworthy.

Preliminary Score: 4/10
Final Score: 3/10

Haven't seen a post by you in ages. Sofuteni, your favourite of the season? Why exactly?

That's interesting, it was one of the series I wasn't bothered about catching up but it now looks like it will be the next series I watch after catching up on Hanasaku Iroha.

A pretty nice ep. I liked the comedy in this one.

A nice watch for simple comedy.

Plot:
The girls of the Hakuou Middle School soft tennis club are aiming for the national championship. Along the way, their journey will be full love, rivalry, fervor, and insanity.
(~from ANN~)

My Thoughts:
Pretty boring and the XEBEC style of animation looks flatter than ever. It's got some good elements, a nice collection of character archetypes, a novel rural setting, etc., it's not just doing much with them so far. Maybe when the blond girl shows up it will spice up the show, otherwise this is begging to be dropped.

P.S. Why do I keep starting threads for shows I don't really like? Someone hurry up and do one for Tiger & Bunny before the compulsion makes me do it too!
But at least Tiger & Bunny is awesome.
