Jun 24 2011 10:32 PM A Channel is a s series that pretty much stays consistent throughout the season. A good dose of comedy each episode but always left with something incomplete and yet unsatisfying. A Channel is moe, slice-of-life...with some hints of shoujo-ai.
The story...there isn't one. It's really a lot like Lucky Star in that each episode is composed of various random events/topics...which isn't surprising since they're both 4-komas. What A Channel lacked however, is that a good chunk of the jokes weren't that funny. In addition, a lot of scenarios became repetitive, e.g. Run's idiocy. While Run's idiocy was hilarious at times, there were moments where I ended up yawning at her stupidity.
Animation is very high and coming from a new studio too: Studio Gokumi, who are the same animators behind the ongoing Koe de Oshigoto! OVA. Art wise was also very interesting, particularly the quality in the OP themes. The scenery was also very good overall...though the character drawers could use some work. There were a few sharp edges on them at times....though it may be because of translating a static 4-koma image into an animated character.
Music was probably the best aspect oft this show. Loved the OP and ED themes, especially the OP theme. The inserts were also very catchy for the most part and were relevant to the episode. If anything, this show likely spent most of its budget on composing your "weekly insert song." Seiyuu wise was fantastic, particularly Aoi Yuuki as Tooru and Minako Kotobuki as Yuuko (loved the strong Kansai dialect!). Kaori Fukuhara as Run was priceless considering she voiced Astrea from Sora no Otoshimono...who kinda has the same character as Run. Nagi's seiyuu, Yumi Uchiyama is the "new kid on the block" with essentially no prior experience prior this show. Quite impressive if you ask me.
Character development is rather shallow. I was hoping for some greater insight on Tooru and Run's past, but I guess I over expected coming from a 4-koma source. Other than that, likely a low score in this department.
Enjoyment? A Channel was enjoyable, certainly not my favorite show each week nor did I constantly look forward to it, but it definitely had its moments when it shined.
Overall, A Channel is a come and go show. It follows Tooru trying to follow and babysit Run to the ends of the Earth. That pretty much sums up the show. Yuuko and Nagi are there for additional comedy relief. While the comedy was certainly decent, the overall show was bland. Nothing particularly special, nor was there anything particularly bad.
Preliminary Score: 6/10
