Since Sato Tetsuhiro, a 22-year-old man, dropped out from the university, he hasnt gone out anywhere except convenience stores, and he has slept 16 hours a day. He has been spending such lazy days for 3 years.

Then, he comes to a conclusion. His dopping out and having no job are due to a giant evil organization, NHK (Nihon Hikikomori Kyokai), or Japan Social Withdrawal Association.

Suddenly, a beautiful girl Nakahara Misaki appears.

You are chosen by my project, saying that, what she hands to him is a contract to support his rehabilitation.

Whether will Sato get rid of his habit?
Who in the world is Misaki, and what is she aiming at?
Is this a plot of NHK, too?

It's that time of the year and I've found myself rewatching the mind-mess that is Welcome To The NHK once again. As always... there's something new that I learn about the series and myself each time that I go through it. This time around, I decided to take my time and press through the story keeping in mind the thought process of Yamazaki. Here's what I've been thinking about as I'm currently sitting at episode 15... dedicated to get through this whole thing in one sitting today. xD!

Yamazaki pretty much struck me as a guy who was oppressed and bullied throughout his life. Despite being through some rough ordeals, his sense of idealism is pretty heavy set in nature. Is it a safe bet to say that he's simply aggressive in his nature of is it more of an internal thing because of the fact that he wants to go the route of blazing his own path despite what everyone else thinks? I can't fault the guy for thinking about women the way that he does... but there must be more to it than just overall hatred from a few select incidents. Ah... who am I kidding... that's appears to be it completely!

Now with that thought... I have to ask about the position that he's in as far as the series is concerned. Yamazaki is a student and is gathering the skills he needs to survive in the world. He gathers himself as he deals with love, life, and an insanely competitive field of profession in Video Game creation. Was he being a good friend to Satou... I'm convinced that he is. I wonder though... if his methods were okay for being a friend to him despite being his underclassman.

Yamazaki was really putting the screws to Satou in order to try to pull him out of his ways. All in all, I'd say that he might have been better off dealing with him on another route... if at all. Maybe there's some kind of honor that's there... ; ... But yeah... after a rewatch, I guess that I'm still learning from this series. Pardon the random bump but that's the long and the short of it.

Just watched the first and second episodes and found the "future where mankind was wiped out" scene to be very similar to the setting of an anime done by CLAMP called X or X/1999. You would have also seen the same environment in the TRC revelations when shaoran and the rest go there.

Anyone else find any other references that are of significant value?

(Sorry if I'm reviving a dead thread but I found it interesting that Gonzo would be allowed to borrow a scene or two from one of CLAMP's works especially since they had no part in animating X. (madhouse did it by the way))

i've been watching the show and it's not bad, but i think the manga is better. The anime has a different feel... it's just not the same.

ya its not very big favorite to many, but this is truely my personal favourite.
the philosophical and psychological themes made it worth watching.
and the author make lot of references and commentaries about the society we live in today, etc. Which was pleasing to see. ( i hate blank minded shows, its so boring)

And potryal of mental illness was another Plus

most anime when someone has a mental illness, they are displayed as some king of psycho, a thief, a villian, etc.
But here we get to see the most normal character with some sort of illness --to--> extreme.
Also shows not all who suffer from some sort of paranoia aren't throwing cats at you, or abused as child. It's such false portryal, and this show breaks such boundaries.

Another theme they wonderfully covered was corruption, of megumi and of course sato's lolicon craze

Chracters are so much more realistic. in 24 episode the develop several characters to extend not even those 100+ episode series could have done.

i think these days too many characters these days are so flat. People are never perfect, and watching even anime pulling crap like "perfect guy" like hollywood movies sickens me.
and when i see something different! which is frankly quite rare. they may change some plot lines up, but its always the same show. Thats why i think "audition" by Miike, (rated R) stuck to me for awhile. Despite its not so pleasnt nature.

There is no American version of the hikikomori. Its a Japanese thing only so far. I doubt most American families could support a hikikomori child for very long. Its finacially demanding.

Bums, vagrants, hobos and other assorted homeless folks really are not the same. They face much harsher conditions than a hikikomori ever would. They tend to be poor, live outside, suffer from malnutrition while a hikikomori never leaves their home and just sleeps, watches TV and trolls the internet while their parents foot the bill.

Its not like other countries don't have hikikomori rather, the other countries don't make a big fuss about it because we view it as a phase/medicate the hell out of it. Really the causes is just being able to rely on someone for support (shelter and food basically) while viewing the outside world as stressful and burdensome.

Hate to break it to you bro but work and class automatically disqualify you from being a hikikimori.

I decided to rewatch this series again last night all the way through... and each time I watch it... I find something else out that I didn't know about myself. I'm having a hard time finding that same introspection inside of the new batch. Then again... the summertime is more for the comedy while the winter is more for the drama... at least, that's how my pattern rides.

On any account... I began to wonder about the various questions that come up in this series... questions that could bring the most liberal person to tears like... "If there was a God, why would he make us suffer like this?" and "Do people seek to find those who are in worse situations then themselves on purpose in order to better themselves?"

I bet a lot of peeps have posed this question at some point... but I thought that I would post it again... and possibly go through this series one more time before I go back to school for my final year of College.

I also wonder if the American equivalent of a hikikomori would be a bum? ... I'm not too sure... but if someone could answer that, I'd appreciate that.

I can say that having lived as a Hikikomori for the past 2 years they are not just bums.
I was about like Misaki, I still went to work and class, but there was no one I had any meaningful relationship with. At my lowest, I started playing WOW and really withdrew from society. Thankfully, I too found someone that gave me a reason to go on living before I did something drastic with my life. She showed me what I was doing not only to myself, but even those around me. I am glad to say I have finally recovered, but it was a long slow process. I am thankful to have been cured, and I hope that I can help those others who still suffer from self-seclusion.

I am glad I found this Anime/Manga/Novel, as it reminds me what I once was, and it, along with those people who I have come to realize care for me, helps keep me pointed in the right direction.
