That sounds sooo wrong. If I showed this to my history-major friend, his head would probably explode.

And the Japanese speak/write in French.

Obviously this is a world either far removed from ours or simply much further in time when a few cultures engulfed many of them.

Such conditions should have been obvious from the second episode where Kanata and Kureha stumble upon the ruins of a Japanese school (with Japanese textbooks and all).

Anyway, this episode was pretty good. The Roman army is moving in to attack right at Seize, so we should see some pretty cool firefights.

Also, Filicia's way of proving that the Roman spy had no understanding of Helvetian was so dang hilarious.

Well, "alternate histories" also need internal consistency, and naturally consistency with the real history before the "reality split".

That said, I dropped the series too long ago to know how well it's doing with that, but I'd predict it's not doing too well.

This is a post apocalyptic world where they seem to be picking up the scraps of what was left behind, similar to Big O.  Technology consists of 1940's stuff all the way to futuristic stuff.  Its plausible that cultural identities may have been messed up along with the previous apocolypse.

Another possibility is that, considering they call it Helvetia instead of Switzerland, they may be going for the Holy Roman Empire instead of Germany (Romans).

I guess what I'm trying to get at is its clearly not meant to be historical but a twist of it, so take the historical inconsistencies for what they're meant to be:  flavor. This story would be nothing with historical accuracy since its the crazy world that makes it anything decent.

Ironically enough, this last episode also had those the elements that anime should've focused on originally from the start - mystery behind the current state of the world (and apparently opposing dogmas between Romans and Helvetians) AND the actual not-so-cold war between these 2 warring states... makes me wanna rage when I see how much time they wasted on moe crap.

And hell, Romans are GERMANS? Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see that one coming. laugh.gif

I'am going to have to be a little... sexist here. Episode 11 showed exactly why you don't let a group of teenage girls run a fortress. Sorry ladies, but if us guys would've been in that siuation that spy would've been handed over to HQ long, long ago; just like she should have been. None of that emotional crap like "we're all the same". NO! Things don't work like that; and I'am disappointed at, whats her name (blonde), that she acted so childish and emotional when what she should've done was in front of her all along; especially considering her past.

That out of the way, I'am sure something cheesy and unrealistic like "negotiations made it in the nick of time" will now come into play with that last phone call, but we'll see next monday.

@terili: Still too much info missing. Fact is, we had to put most of it together using our imagination, such as what exactly was said on the phone; certain conversations, ect. It simply made it no fun. Yes, the pieces come together, but as I've said it was simply a book with pages missing.

I'm rather surprised at the reactions to Rio's situation being expressed here. You knew in the "telephone duty" episode that Rio had run away from a situation at home, and anyone who has the power to commandeer the "test call" as her father did is obviously someone very highly placed. That he didn't simply order her to return, that he _let_ her remain distant was a clue to her own position ( she wasn't afraid of any "official" reprimand cause she knew there wasn't going to be one--she was too important for that). Then in the following episode she gets a summons, and still ignores it, is another clue. A soldier just _does not_ ignore official orders, so these weren't official.

And all along for the last several episodes they've been saying how negotiations haven't been going well, how things could break out into fighting again. I figured from these clues that somehow Rio was involved in those negotiations as a pawn, somehow, especially when you include her father on the phone saying that they needed her.

This episode simply brought all those things together, especially when they explained the background in this episode. You'll notice that she decided to return only after she heard that the "Roman" army was massing on the border, clearly a prelude to renewing the fighting and she realized she had no choice if she didn't want to see her country possibly destroyed, and her freinds, soldiers, definitely killed in the fighting.

The new episode was very good with this sad atmosphere. It should have been like that in the others episodes (well not all of them xD but a few would have been great).

Now we know more about Illya and her link with Rio and Kanata but...

and what I don't understand is how they could simply get rid of Rio like that; with no real setup whatsoever...

I think the same ! When I saw Kanata and Kureha crying, I didn't understand why. I knew the music sang on trumpet meant something but what ? Then I saw Rio quitting the village and I was "wait... WTF? Where are you going and why?"

It was too rushed without any explanation =/ A little deception =/

some how, I kind of expect "One year later" or something for next episode. Episode 10 feels rushed. Too much is revealed only 1/2 way and that sometime is annoying, feel like it just rambles on without a real connected plot.

Exactly. I was thinking "time skip" as well, but who knows anymore with this one... although they can't just kick one of the heroines out with the crappy info given to us.

Shinobu I don't think it's as simple a solution as that. Considering what this anime has been throwing at us with other titles that could have meant they'd finally move out, this could simply mean that a fire somehow started on the dried wood in the fields or something, thus I refuse to hope for much more than that.

well usually any episode with the words "burning fields" in the title means there's a battle coming up. huh.gif
