Kitamura Kou, the son of a sporting goods shopkeeper is childhood friends with the four Tsukishima sisters of the batting center cum cafe, Clover.

The Tsukishima are: the reliable elder sister Ichijou; the second eldest Wakaba, with whom Kou is on the best terms; the third, Aoba, with whom Kou doesn't get along; and the energetic youngest sister Momiji.

During the summer of 5th grade, Wakaba left her camp to keep her promise to attend the summer festival with Kou, but is involved in a fatal accident.

Kou, now in high school, works to turn into reality a dream which Wakaba last saw prior to her death: to play as a star baseball player in Koshien Stadium. Aoba, too, then joins the team, and so the wheels of fate begin to turn.

So this is a show I missed over this past year and I blew through in 10 days...All I can say is WHAT/HOW DID I MISS THIS?

Cross Game on the outside seems like your average sports show like Major, Touch, or Ookiku Furikabutte, but on the other side of the coin, it's a completely different world. Adding on a similar feeling like the 1985-1987 baseball anime Touch, as well as originally created by the same person, Mitsuru Adachi, Cross Game takes Touch to a whole new level. Rather than fighting to show who's more accomplished, Cross Game adds the heavy twist of drama from the get go. With an astounding, yet shocking first episode, Cross Game was an easy pick up for those who decided to give the show a chance. Those who blew it off as a typical sports anime were simply left to bite the dust of an anime that currently ranks as high as the masterpiece Evangelion 2.22 on Anidb (at the time of this post). A show that was probably unexpected to go so far in 50 episodes is truly astounding. The pacing of the series was absolutely fantastic with a mix of comedy, drama, and even plot twists. As far as I'm concerned, there was one filler episode in the series, which was episode 30 (I think) where it was essentially a recap about Wakaba. While on this matter, there were a bit too many repetitive scenes, but it wasn't bad to the extent that it got irritating though.
Having not read the Cross Game manga, I am thoroughly impressed by the anime presentation whether or not it follows the source material. The series leaps off from the get go leaving a fantastic impression for the audience, and then plays with the audience's emotions throughout the rest of the show almost like a roller coaster. I've been watching anime for quite some time and it has been an extremely long while since I've seen a masterful plot such as this, especially for a romance, let alone sports anime. The only things I wished they would finish up was the plot between Akaishi and Akane as that was an interesting aspect, showing a bit more about Wakaba's final dream, seeing if Ko ended up buying the final 2 gifts for Wakaba, and potentially what happened the year after that Koshien when Aoba is a senior.

Coming from SynergySP, this was surely shocking. The only noteworthy work I've seen from them was Hayate no Gotoku! and so the animation quality is as expected for the most part, but the character designs and details were very well done. Although it aired in half HD, this is still quite impressive as SynergySP does not seem like they have the budget to actually pull off full HD shows, especially for a show running for 50 episodes. I wasn't expecting too much out of them so this is really the best it could get as is.

The sound? I wasn't a fan of the OP, but definitely a fan of most of the ED themes. They fit the mood quite well for the most part. For 50 episodes though, you would think that they would at least change up the OP themes. Even though they changed part of the video, the amount was so insignificant... Putting that aside, the seiyuus were fantastic. Miyu Irino (Syaoran from Tsubasa Chronicle and Saji Crossroad from Gundam 00) as Ko and Haruka Tomatsu wub.gif (Corticarte from Polyphonica and Lala from To Love-Ru) as Aoba were both fantastic! Never have I seen a tsundere role come close to Kugimiya's and this was absolutely priceless at every possible moment throughout the series. The rest of the cast was solid as well, especially given the types of characters they played and how they were designed.

Character development? Absolutely solid. As mentioned in the discussion about the plot, the series was paced very well. The show covered every potential plot hole there could have been and left stuff that wouldn't really make an audience member question the validity of the event in the show. Insight about each character was also given along the way regardless of the slow pace, even up to the final episodes.

Enjoyment? What can I say? Although I'm disappointed that I personally missed the show while it was running for the past year as I would have enjoyed it much much more, it's very difficult to say as to whether or not my review for this show would have changed as I am absolutely thrilled about this show. It's rare that one comes across a valuable gem such as this these days, especially one that beats out the "supposedly" tear-jerking Clannad ~After Story~. If anything, Cross Game made me shed tears more than Clannad, especially the last three episodes of the series, and that wasn't me being sad that the series was over.

Overall, a masterpiece is a masterpiece. There is nothing more to be said about this show except that it needs to be given a chance. Sure the show is rated G by MAL, but that shouldn't discourage people to watch this show or give people the wrong impression that it's a kid's show. I mean, what were you expecting out of a baseball themed show in the first place? Score: 10/10 This truly deserves a place as one of the best anime series of all time.

I agree airsick_moth that it did get more exciting after Akane showed up. It certainly increased the drama side of things. However, I found the show enjoyable as a whole and I'm really sad to see it end. The hug at the end was really touching, and I got a little teary eyed watching it. I still wish they had showed a bit more of Aoba x Kou, but at least their feelings for one another became clear at the end.
It was really cute when they showed that Aoba had already asked for a duplicate of their picture together before Kou thought of it. Showing once again how much they are alike smile.gif

edit-- lol JCD, we almost posted at the same time. After I posted I noticed your post and thought hmm that wasn't there 1 min ago!
Anyway as for ratings, I gave it a 10/10. Maybe that seems like too high of a rating, but animes that I enjoyed this much are hard to come-by. It has kept me interested in it for a whole year, and I just loved the characters.

That pretty much followed how the manga ended and I guess to a certain level I'm really happy for that and since this is Adaichi, he sometimes does this sort of ending. rolleyes.gif

The series was fun to marathon and so the slightly slow pacing didn't bother me much. The basball action is inferior to Ookiku Furikabutte (aka Oofuri) and I guess like Oofuri much more than Cross Game overall and another reason why I liked it more is that Oofuri had better music but Cross Game's BGM was very good too. wink.gif

AobaxKou......yeah.....its sad that Adaichi stopped it there but I understand why he did it, in the fact that it finally brought a close to the Wakaba incident, which at the beginning left both Aoba and Kou in separate sides but were brought closer together under Wakaba's will somewhat. wink.gif However, I do realise that a few will be a bit unsatisfied with this type of ending and I would be lying if I said no but I like it still. As for a continuation, that depends on Adaichi if he wants to re-visit the series after finishing it in February 2010 but its unlikely because he hasn't really done something like go back into a series before (as far as I know....correct me if I'm wrong). rolleyes.gif

I'm giving this series a 8.5 or 9 out of 10, I really liked this series and I'm not sure how to rate it but for now I'll leave it at that. tongue.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif

I almost gave up at episode 30, it was just a repack of episode 1. It didn't really grab me at first, but as someone who gravitates to sport anime, there were slim pickings for new stuff. I stuck it out and the run-up to koshien really worked with the frappe of rivalries that were not overtly hostile conflicts like in the first series. It took a while for the storyline to work, and it seemed that they had established the characters and then killed time til Akane showed up. After that, the story started chugging along at a good pace.

But yea over all good anime. I hope they have an OVA of them at Koshien.

Episodce 49 was more Aoba being astonished...blah...blah. rolleyes.gif Decent episode and I was kinda stupid in thinking that the baseball match would finish in this episode and I'm now positive that the series will finish just like the manga and perhaps something extra. Episode 50 has been released and subbed but I won't watch it until later today, just wanted to give a shout about episode 49 before I did it. rolleyes.gif Now....I better get back to my revision schedule....got exams in June. wink.gif

I started watching this series on Monday after seeing how Julezia liked this series. I watched exactly 6 episodes on Monday night and I was very sick because it seems I've been struck by the flu but I was kinda lucky with not having any lectures yesterday and woke up early in the morning and started watching Cross Game because I just got addicted to it but still did about 4 hours of studying too....anyways, I watched up to episode 40. Since, I've got half-day, I'm gonna head back home and catch up to the latest episode. The series is set to end at episode 50 and well the manga has finished and I just spoiled myself by reading the last couple of manga chapters aka chapter 155 to 160 (technically chapters 165 to 170)because I wanted to know how they will end it and I sooooo knew Adachi loves employing this type of ending, which he has used a couple of times. wink.gif

EDIT:

I came back early and watched the latest One Piece episode (442) before continuing my marathon. I just caught up and its quite good but not brilliant and I so know a few may be slightly disappointed with this series but I still love it......at the moment its currently riding on a 9/10, it had 10/10 from me earlier about episode 30, when Akane-chan was itnroduced and was hoping they would use her character more, which they have done but not in the way I thought she was going to be used. wink.gif

Episode 49 will air on 21st March (5 more days) and probably a subbed release will come out the following day. rolleyes.gif

Just a quick correction as a die-hard baseball fan. Even without the homerun, it would not have been a perfect game. Due to Senda's error, had Kou retired the last batter then he would have thrown a "no hitter".

EDIT: Someone who has read the manga says that the anime has covered through 140 chapters of 170 total. So it's very possible that it can be paced reasonably and follow the manga ending.

So apparently the Cross Game manga will be ending next week or so. Anyone know how far in the anime actually is at the moment?

So does this question mean you're just reading the manga or are you curious from a manga reader's perspective? But if you're asking solely an anime viewer in the last episode (44) Seishu just defeated Miki's team their first victory of the tournament (as third years). Kou pitched a perfect game until the very last out when he gave up a home run -- yikes! Aoba asked Kou what her umm charming features were (Azuma's compliment brought that question on) and he said that sometimes you can be too close to someone to fully recognize them (evasive as usual) or something close to that. Kou seems to be getting more and more popular and Aoba is taking notice. I would say those are about the highlights of the current episode.

But I'm also curious to know if someone is reading the manga and the anime exactly where are they at in comparison (close or a ways apart?)

It was awesome to see Daimon lose yet again because of his brimming overconfidence when playing a "no name" school... and to Miki, a player he benched, of all people. Can't wait for the upcoming matchup of Seishu vs. Sena.

Also, yes, I do think Akaishi is Kou's rival for Akane (if he decides to pursue her). This episode just reinforced it. When Akane came over to give Kou some stuff, instead of letting Akane wake Kou up, Akaishi told her to let him sleep and offered to walk her back home. While considerate, it could also be seen as a bit manipulative as well.
