Okay finally i have seen the ending (and episode 00) to this series. I didn't exactly found it to be the final as the name of this series suggested. It felt like we got to see something similar to season 2. Why didn't they make it into a proper and closed ending which this series deserves? I would have loved to see a continuation of Nodame's proposal of marriage. A sort of episode in which we got to see all the previous members of the cast of all the seasons together for a wedding of Nodame en Chiaki (and of course a performance of the S-orchestra).
Now it was below my expectations so if dragged my overall score for this season down. For all the other aspect of this season i can agree with Kit-Tsukasa.
For me this season was worth a 7.5.

Nice catch, actually! Didn't know that about the OP. BWV 147, Chorale: Wohl mir, dass ich Jesum habe, for everyone's record wink.gif It's just a very tiny reference though dry.gif

As for the ED, I don't really know, I don't think it is, at least nothing that I can distinguish from the TV version specifically... S1's OPED didn't really have references iirc, so it's not that unlikely that it just doesn't have one either.

Hi!

I would like to ask that don't you know that the ending of Nodame Cantabile: Finale (Kaze to Oka no Ballad by Real Paradis) has any connection with classical music like other Noda' op/ed?

I know that the opening has a reference with Bach's Cantata BWV 147.

Sorry for my poor English I hope that's still understandable.

Thanks

Wasn't there a Best 100 OST for S1? IIRC... It wasn't very impressive so I doubt this will be.

I don't recall this but you might be right. Either way they're coming out with another one tongue.gif

Moving on to the OP and ED sequence, the OP theme is better than the Paris-hen OP

Lots less inventive though tongue.gif I liked the Paris-Hen idea of reworking famous classical pieces into cheesy-sounding pop-tunes.

I'd also disagree with you on the part that the show is about music. I'd say the show is about musicians, music being a natural part of it, but also a somewhat background part, too. I can't say I mind them cutting down on playing the actual pieces in the episodes, and very short introductions were more than enough.

I can't say I'm very much into Japanese people playing classical pieces, especially soloists, especially on string instruments. Thankfully it's mostly piano pieces here, but still. My suggestion is, if you truly love classical music and/or some of the pieces played in the series, don't bother with the OST and go get a record of a good performance, thankfully classical music CDs are plentiful. I already got Ravel piano concerto, London Orchestra I think, forget who the soloist is, but well worth it.

So the ending is basically the same as the manga ending...the show just simply ends no confession between the two, but a very clear idea of where Chiaki, Nodame, and everyone else's future are like

It's been a fun ride for 3 years now and yet another outstanding series come and gone. Although Nodame Cantabile didn't have the best pace for plot, it has the strong slice-of-life feel where not everything goes perfectly for someone. The Finale's plot was quite close to the manga. However, the show seemed to have cut out a number of parts with characters that ended up not showing up in the anime to the extent that it makes me wonder why J.C. Staff chose not to make a 23-26 episode series for Paris-hen and Finale when the first season was of that length? It wasn't as if this show wasn't successful to begin with. Overall though, the romance bits were a bit rushed as expected but the comedy and plot development through each character's hardships were kept well intact throughout all three seasons and the Finale did no less. It would seem, however, that the director, Chiaki Kon, may want to polish up her skills a little bit since her recent works, including Nodame Cantabile Finale, have begun to take a few disappointing turns throughout the series.

Since Paris-hen the animation has gotten slightly better. Colors are more vivid but the drawings felt a little off at times and many portions of the show ended up being recycled from past seasons. Although it seems as if J.C. Staff began to slack, it was still a very solid production overall and gave a 2005 feel, which is where the series is set in. It was also nice to continue the artistic/music theme, which differs from most shows in this age.

Music...there's really not much to say here. The show is about classical music. If you don't like classical music, then you're going to hate this show very very much. The whole show revolved around this to begin with and I won't comment on this since this portion of the review can be biased in many different directions (by the way, I actually enjoy classical music to a degree so I'm no hater). That aside, the voice cast is the exact same as the previous season except for Elise, who is now voiced again by Tomoko Kawakami, who originally voiced Elise in the first season. Elise was voiced by Kumi Sakuma in Paris-hen. Why they changed this throughout each season confuses me to no end. Moving on to the OP and ED sequence, the OP theme is better than the Paris-hen OP but not as good as the first season OP, which I also didn't like all that much. It's an improvement, but just not style. The ED theme on the other hand is amazing. A very nice orchestra playing in the background as an accompaniment to the vocals and am very pleased, especially compared to the "trash" we got in the first two seasons. Basically, music and sound was up and down throughout the series and the final rating would have to depend on your taste in classical music.

Character development...is probably the weakest aspect in Nodame Cantabile Finale. There were so many characters in this series and half of them looked alike. Not to mention that they attempted to bring/remind everyone of the main cast in season 1, which made it less helpful. In this season alone, we didn't really get much character development. Not exactly a surprise though since they were attempting to wrap up everything in such a short time frame, but they really could have done better by going into more detail about Vieira and Chiaki since that was Chiaki's lifelong goal and his purpose of coming to Paris in the first place. Eventually, that ended up disappearing as if nothing ever happened.

Enjoyment: As I said before, it's been a fun ride these past 3 years of the series. Although I wish they had animated everything in the manga, I still enjoyed what J.C. Staff has brought us and what parts Chiaki Kon chose to animate. Although I can't say I looked forward to this every week like I said with To Aru Kagaku no Railgun or Hidamari Sketch Hoshimittsu, it was still one of the better shows this season and pretty confident at this point that it will be one of the best shows this year.

Overall, I would have to give the finale a 9/10. The ending was pretty much what I expected since I had already read the manga, and thus may have spoiled myself. If I hadn't though, I think I may have gave this a 7/10 or 8/10 simply because I would not have been satisfied with such an ending.

Keep in mind, however, that this is not the end of Nodame Cantabile. The main 3 seasons may have ended but there is more scheduled as well as those outside the anime industry that have yet to come:
Nodame Cantabile Finale DVD Only Episode: April 7, 2010
Nodame Cantabile Finale OVA 2 (special extra chapter): April 26, 2010
Nodame Cantabile Live Action (aired in 2006)
Nodame Cantabile Europe (aired in 2008)
Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score Part 1 (aired in Japan in December/January, out on DVD/BD in June 2010)
Nodame Cantabile: The Final Score Part 2 (unknown)
and for those of you that enjoyed Puri Gorota, there is a movie specifically for it that came out with the original Nodame Cantabile DVD, unfortunately never subbed

On another note, the Nodame Cantabile Complete Best 100 OST will be out on April 7th. My guess is it will compile many of the pieces played throughout all three seasons.

As far as not seeing more Nodame, there's always ways to do it: rewatch the series, rewatch the live-action, read the manga, etc etc.

You know that there's an extra episode and another OVA coming out soon: -

1.) 7th April 2010 ------> http://myanimelist.net/anime/8038/Nodame_C..._Finale_Special

2.) 26th April 2010 -----> http://myanimelist.net/anime/8190/Nodame_Cantabile_OVA_2

As far as the ending goes, it was OK. Felt a bit rushed in some places, and a bit too open. I was sort of disappointed the whole dilemma with the proposal was completely dropped/avoided. In the end, it felt nowhere as big/moving as the season 1 ending. But yeah, at least the side-characters were wrapped up properly. And the overarching "message" wasn't bad either. Too bad that getting a life partner who can understand you musically is lots easier in anime than it real life. Especially given my somewhat esoteric (read:weird) musical tastes... dry.gif

As for the Onion Festival, yeah... The French and their onions... And also some sad truths about a musician's life. You play when you're told and what you're told, work like a horse, the side-gigs have horrible conditions and are humiliating, and the director/manager is usually a total idiot/jackass. Well, at least in this case they're somewhat lucky with the conductor wink.gif I'm actually surprised how often the author is spot-on with everyday life description for musicians. I wonder where that knowledge is coming from. unsure.gif

Wow, if you would have told me a minute before I started watching episode 11 that Frank and Rui would get together in some fashion, I would have laughed like crazy.

Anyway, I loved this episode. I heard that the fans didn't really enjoy the manga ending (at least the Nodame fans I talked to), but I never asked about it for fear of spoilers and stuff, but I absolutely loved this ending. Getting Nodame to play the Mozart piece for 2 pianos again to strike her motivation back up, the subsequent jumping on Chiaki and Chiaki firmly embracing her. Then getting more closure on Yun Long, Tanya/Kuroki, Rui, Frank, Mine (I couldn't tell if that was him playing in an orchestra with Kiyara in the present or the past with the Rising Star Orch), etc. I also loved the Marlet Orchestra performing at the onion harvest festival.

The only thing I hated from this episode is that it means I'm not going to see anymore Nodame (other than an OVA or two maybe), which really saddens me sad.gif

^ It's called Faust by Gounod/Goethe, go read it/listen to it/watch it in an opera house, if you haven't done at least on of the three yet. That's what's being rehearsed anyway, and the quotes are from the famous Mephistopheles' aria, unless my mind is playing tricks with me. I don't think it is though, since the reference is fairly obvious.

Stresseman may indeed have nothing "bad" on his mind, but I wonder what the cost for his "help" will turn out to be. Still, he as the Devil was a pretty witty choice, if a bit far-fetched thus far. We'll have to see how it turns out.

So, the Ravel's there, finally. Funny how the show has been consistently re-introducing me to the composer that I've been mostly ignoring for a while. Interestingly, I can't say the piece fits Nodame's personality very well, I don't think sleazy romanticism fits her too well, nor does the Gershwin-like jazzy first mvt. Someone like Stravinsky would probably be more in with her unstable character, if she could grow up a bit emotionally (like remember, the Petrushka piece she played in S1?).

But still, what a wicked trip for the winds, esp. flutes and trumpets. No wonder the concerto isn't played that often laugh.gif
