If the Touhou-ish designs weren't enough evidence especially engi-chan and merry-chan although those are just pretty much circumstantial and the drawing style of the characters especially the eyes is similar in Advent Cirno and for the fact IOSYS was involved

Oh well here's your proof

How so, you may ask. Well, Yumekui Merry is written and illustrated by Yoshitaka Ushiki. Yes, that Yoshitaka Ushiki of One Night Stand, the creator of one of the most famous Toho doujins of all time.

and here's his works in danbooru which I believe came from Pixiv

JC staff is pretty much a hit or miss to me, but lately they have been leaning on the Studion DEEN level if you ask me I already dropped To aru 2 ages ago. I just hope they dont mess up SnS3 and Kami Memochou.

I picked up this show because If Im not mistaken this came from the circle who did the Advent Cirno doujin (One Night Stand)

Ok I need to proof on that part, or just the entire Advent Cirno volume sinc eI know I'm missing parts here and there mind you.

In any case with this series I could of swarn that they were pulling a Studio DEEN by messing things up left and right here.

I finally got time to finish this show which WAS WAY delayed.

I picked up this show because If Im not mistaken this came from the circle who did the Advent Cirno doujin (One Night Stand)

While the earlier eps felt mediocre the Middle and Climax felt compelling. I pretty much enjoyed the characters. Especially Engi whom is my Favorite in overall Design and Merry too. Let's not forget John Doe whom I kinda disliked from the beginning until his appearance in Ep 6 which gave him a much interesting character.

While the show was excellent The ending was just plain terrible. Another show similar show I could've think of that handled the climax bad was Dog Days but at least Dog Days made it pull through the end despite the short coming. Yumekui Merry on the other hand didn't.

I also have to agree with Wolfie here, The battle with Mysteltain was plain awful. What happened to the badassery of Merry and Engi here? Where the heck did their previous abilities went warranting them to just become punching bags. Yumeji's part was also a Total C*ck Blocker.

The Trumpet I could Understand
No qualms with that, She was just simply Reinforcing her "Dream" Remember her speech about being in a band? One could take que she was pointing she loved music and she was "visualizing" it to help Engi as Nightmares rely on their hosts dreams.

But the biggest disappointment for me was not Yumeji but Merry herself. What happened to her so called "monstrous ability" and besides WAS it not shown that their President Was OKAY? after Merry sent Chris back wasn't that enough proof Merry could truly sent Nightmares back? More or less Merry seems to be a GateKeeper of some sort (The Keys and for the Fact she can mediate the sending of Nightmares) and has an ability to even match Pharos and Jungle Girl. and *sigh* I do not want to start with Pharos.

JC staff better make a season 2 for this. As much I am wary of them handling the series as they tend to mess up *cough*Shakugan S2*cough*

Still I'll just be checking the Manga instead.

Yumekui Merry...a series that started with a mediocre potential, built up a very compelling and interesting story, but faceplanted on the most important episode. I wouldn't be surprised if this show gets a sequel since the final few minutes had that written all over it. However, the fact that it left a lot of issues unexplained (e.g. Pharos, Yumeji getting John Doe's weapon, Parade's disappearance, etc...) and a lot of "miracles" in the final episode really put a dent in this show. For a show that had the potential to rise in the ranks only ultimately falling back on itself.

The story is indeed interesting as Merry Nightmare tries to make her way back to where she came from. The downside is that she doesn't have a single lead. The lack of depth in this show also really hurt it, particularly with who Yumeji really is and where did his powers come from. This show had lots going for it, especially with the final fight against Mistletine, but again, unexplained phenomenons.

Animation was pretty solid for this show actually. Probably one of the better animated shows by J.C. Staff recently (Tantei Opera Milky Holmes being the other last year), especially considering Bakuman got the upscale treatment. Details were also drawn nicely in differentiating Dream Demons from humans when they take them over as vessels.

Music was also decent and seiyuu choices were relatively decent. There were a number of times in the final episode where acting was pretty bad and monotone but I'm willing to cut it some slack since it may have been a rushed job as a result of the March 11 earthquake/tsunami. Keep in mind that Japanese anime are actually made ready to go 1-2 weeks prior to the actual airing. Yumekui Merry was only delayed one week (the weekend of the earthquake) meaning it had little time to recover, especially since we were hitting the finale of winter shows at that time. This may also be why the plot was rushed for the final episode but in that case, they may as well have broadcasted it via web and delayed it like with Madoka.

Enjoyment? Can't say I did. The characters were pretty shallow overall with the side characters actually receiving most of the beneficial treatment...of course, most of them were non-recurring, so that doesn't help. It was pretty dull until around half way through the series before it really got interesting and attracted my attention.

Overall, the last episode may have been a fluke because of the earthquake, but since I'm in no position to judge of what happened behind the scenes and only what is produced, we got what we got is all I can say. It's a show with a lot of potential and I heard the manga is quite good. But the lack of any depth in this show regardless of the earthquake is really the thorn in my side about this show.

Preliminary Score: 6/10
Final Score: 6/10

Yeah the whole air trumpet was one of the things I didn't understand either. Also, with Yuumeji deciding to pull off a I "Borrow" my dream demon's weapon to smack you around was kind of far fetched. Also, Merry finally is able to send back that dream demon with confidence which makes me question why did she get all paranoid about not being able to send them back or not in the first place.

The end was just terrible. Yumeji suddenly getting John Does weapon? Chizuru sacrifices herself without any use and nobody cares? Yuki playing airtrumpet? This is just all so random it destroyed an otherwise really good series. And the characters.
The main problem was that the producers made Mistelteinn far too strong so they had too pull all this shit at the end.

Except for the final the series was pretty good with a nice setting, good characters and an interesting story. Too bad that the producers didnt focus on the story.

Overall only a 6/10. It wouldve been more if the end was better. And if there was no air trumpet.

Ok after seeing the last episode all I can say is this series was a bit too rushed if you ask me. I mean it pretty much was trying to teel a story that should of been 24/26 episodes long here and only ended up tell a little under half of it.

Overall it pretty much showed that since Merry and Play were in an emotional state of confusion on how to fight Mistelteen of course they would get thrashed in the previous episode. Although with Yuumeji decieding to pull of the morale booster move along with "borrowing" Chaser's weapon kind of felt a bit rushed as well. In the end they were able to take down Mistelteen which was sort of a given, but Merry is still around, and the Lighthouse guy hasn't been spotted either.

In any case if the DVD/BlueRays sell well they might try and go for a second season here. Although with the way this season was they better improve upon the mess they cuased here. My Overall Score for this series is a 4.5/10 only becuase it felt rather emo much at times.

Nothing wrong with showing characters emotions, but not when it's either them in a normal mood or emo mode only.

It seems that the stronger the humans emotions are the stronger the Dream Demon gets when born. And with all the hatred and agony in the world its no surprise so many Dream Demons are out and that some of them are pretty strong.

Seems like Mistelteen will be the last enemy of this series. I wonder if we get a second season since the part with Pharoe isnt solved and John Doe should get a few scenes too.
