End of Edo period, aliens called "Amanto" began to invade the Earth, and the war between the Earth and Amanto broke out. During the war, many samurai lost their lives. However, the Earth was no match for the overwhelming weapons of Amand, and they surrendered to Amando. The government became a puppet of Amando, and Amandos had their own way in Edo city. On the other hand, the government banned the samurai from carrying swords.
The story takes place around a samuri and their buddies who live in this hard time for samurai,
Jul 2 2009 09:51 AM Since I always prance naked, practicing my Kamehameha wave while singing cheesy pop songs, I didn't see what was so funny about that episode. Actually, the funny thing to me was that I was just watching another anime that referenced Momotaro so I didn't even need to read the notes in this ep.
Gin and Katsura being tuned into old men? Well, it's now like they have bodies to match their bickering old-man personalities.
Jul 2 2009 06:01 AM What did you guys think of the latest ep where Gin and Zura ended up turning into old men? This will be a pretty funny arc as well, at least from what I can remember happening in the manga. I really liked Shinpachi's "cast-away" like nightmare. Especially funny when he was running around naked... only to find he wasn't alone... another naked person, kyaaaaa!!!!! lol out of all the "embarrassing" things that they were doing alone, I have to say I thought Gin's was the funniest, and next to him Katsura, who didn't seem all that embarrassed at all I can't wait to see Gin and Zura act as old geezers. Funny that Gin shrunk, and Zura didn't.
Finally caught up!. Finished all 163 eps. But still have to say Yoshiwara Arc (which i mistakenly called Yoshikura Arc previously) was easily the best.
The best arcs are probably the Kyubei Arc (Episode 76-81), Owee Game Arc (Episode 98-99) and Yoshiwara Arc (139-146).
Well that's my opinion. Like i guess for Action the Yoshiwara Arc is the best, but for comedy i gotta go with the Kyubei Arc. Like come on Konda wipes his ass with Sandpaper and shits on the floor.
Jun 24 2009 03:50 PM Yeah, #1 is a pretty abrupt start, but fortunately for me, I immediatly fell in love with Saa-chan and Yuu Kobayashi's voice, so it was easy for me to stick around long enough to get to know the rest of the characters. Sugita Tomokazu doing Gin's voice didn't hurt either. He's always entertaining to listen to even in crap roles, which Gin obviously isn't.
I'm with Julez, no way could I skip ahead. The show is generally episodic, but it's also extremely self-referential, so the spoiler aad "WTF is going on" factor would likely be very high. And in any case, I hope the subbers keep at it even when they catch up becasue they are much better than CR at staying on top of all the references. I've watched some old eps on CR and they have left some good stuff out. So even though I plan to catch up once they reach that point, I'll still go back and watch the fansub works if they are available.
Jun 24 2009 08:09 AM I think you're right about the first episode Sai, it does turn a lot of ppl off because so many things are happening, with characters you don't know and it's hard to understand for a first time viewer. I'm the type of person who gives a show a fair chance so I continued with the next few eps. I got hooked after the first Shinsengumi ep, the one when a camera crew followed the Shinsengumi for a day, I just thought it was so funny.
Also Marine is right about Rumbel subs, they do an awesome job with the references, and you know Gintama is actually educational in a way, you learn so much about Japanese culture from watching it
ps. Sai, I love the Dead Fantasy gif in your sig! GO TIFA!
Jun 24 2009 07:59 AM It just never got my attention when it first started but I kept hearing about it from people so I gave it a try a while back. But you know how that first episode just put you right in the middle of things so it didn't really grab me. Then I tried it again from the next episode at a later time and I was hooked. Think it's been a period of about two months but after ten more episodes I'll finally be caught up.
Jun 24 2009 02:38 AM To be honest I would not watch groups other than Rumbel. They really put in the effort in doing their homework on finding and explaning the references and backgrounds. I don't think I would understand the joke/humour in many occasion if without their explanations.
Jun 24 2009 02:16 AM Yeah, I knew about Gintama from years ago, but the first episode somehow put me off watching it. Takes a while getting used to. Lol. But once you do watch it, i gotta say it is one of the best series i've seen.
I don't think you will miss anything. I'm pretty sure there are no characters introduced from 115-128 that are in 129-162.
Episodes 129 and on pretty much have the same Gintama cast, with an exception on those who are introduced during the episodes. I don't think you will be lost in any of the episodes.
Tbh, i think waiting for 115-128 to be subbed by the current sub your watching from is going to take a long long time. Lol.
Jun 23 2009 02:45 PM Yeah I know I could skip ahead but.... I want to see everything in order. I'm worried I might miss out on something if I just go ahead and watch the CR subs.
Hmm this Yoshikura arc sounds interesting... (but no spoilers please ) I like all the arcs in the series so far. Especially the last Shinsengumi arc, that was awesome! I'm also glad to see more fans of the show are starting to post in the thread, yay welcome JC-Hobz, Sai, Chaxo and REYOMA. Accipiter and I won't be the only ones posting in here anymore
Jun 22 2009 08:47 PM Julzia, Gintama is currently on 162, This week 163 will be out.
The Fansubber your downloading from is only up to 114, whereas the one from CrunchyRoll (Not sure if your allowed to say CR on these forums) has Gintama 129-162.
I've watched 1-114 and 129-162, the missing episodes don't make too much of a difference, because episodes 129-162 are not dependent on 115-128. And if you don't want to watch it on stream there is a group that torrents Gintama which is taken/stolen from CR.
