A new Shinkai Makoto feature.

Tono Takaki had to part from Shinohara Akari after the gradation from the elementary school. Despite their secret thoughts, only time has passed. One day, Takasi is going to see Akari in the heavy snow.

This movie is a collection of three stories; the first episode, Okasho, shows the day of their reunion. In the next episode, Cosmonaut, the story about Takaki after the reunion takes place from the viewpoint of another person. The last episode, Byosoku 5 centimeter, clips out the movements of their thoughts.

A friend recommended 5 Centimeters per Second and added the warning that I should watch it with a box of tissues handy. I'm really pleased that I followed his advice and watched this OVA as it's now on my list of all-time anime favourites. When it is finally released in Australia (which will probably take some time) I will have to add it to my collection.

Just after the recommendation, I read a feature article on the independent director Makoto Shinkai (the one responsible for 5 Centimeters per Second) in the July edition of Anime Insider ("Rising Star") and this only made me even more determined to watch this.

The style of animation is truly mesmerising and exceedingly beautiful. Even the most mundane situations, like being stuck on a train that's running late, are portrayed with an exquisite sensitivity that draws the eye to the subtle, and sometimes heartbreaking, beauty of the everyday. Shinkai's use of light and colour is very distinctive and a dream-like, impressionistic, style is evident throughout.

5 Centimeters per Second is a very poignant story about three intersecting lives and the love that binds them together. A Tale of Cherry Blossoms, the first episode, presents Takaki Tohno and Akari Shinohara's very first romance. It's an exceedingly sweet exploration of a childhood love and traces their relationship from its first stirrings up to their forced separation. Cosmonaut, the second episode, focuses on Kanae Sumida who is in love with Takaki Tohno. Now a high school senior, Takaki appears distant and somewhat detached from the world around him. Kanae does her best to attract his attention; however, although he is friendly towards her, she is unable to determine whether the future she longs to share with him is possible. 5CM Per Second, the third and final episode, presents Takaki as an adult. Now a computer programmer, he appears to be fairly settled in his life. A glimpse of a seemingly familiar face sparks a memory but it is a brief occurrence and perhaps the past no longer has any hold over Takaki.

Like the falling Cherry Blossoms, it would appear that people can be swept away by a capricious breeze. Lives may intersect but the paths that people are set upon can also diverge.

Other anime by Makoto Shinkai:
  • Other World (1999)
  • She and Her Cat (2000)
  • Voices of a Distant Star (2002)
  • "Egao" Music Video (2003)
  • The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004)
  • ef - a tale of memories Prologue (2007)

i agree with you, but i think it they had gotten together it would have cheapened the story. although, i thought it would have been good if he eventually ended up with the second girl (can't remember her name, sicec ive only watched the raw for the second two episodes >_<), or at least someone ^^;;.

yea anyone would have been fine with me by the time this came to an end biggrin.gif ... one thing though and it might just be me but, if you find your potential soul mate i'd you'd put a little bit more effort than writing letters to be with them.... i would have probably started saving money, get an apartment near her ect.... would have been tough on him but w/e thats just my opinion

That was just so sadd... When i saw the wedding ring on her finger i almost started crying, she had moved on, and eventually forgot him. She only remembered him when she saw an old letter from when they we're 13. Then his last chance slips away when they walked by each other at the rail crossing only to have 2 trains pass by at the same moment they turned around and she walks away probably thinking it couldn''t have been him. I would have really liked for them to get together in the end, something like Love Triumphs or something but i guess it just shows that life changes, the heart changes  and people move on, so in the end he just walks away with a smile on his face, ready to face what tomorrow will bring. It was a beautiful story with beautiful animation. one of the best i have ever seen. The OST was really good, the music fit the mood it was just really good. The story is a bit slow paced but i liked it still. In the second arc/story i was actually rooting for Sumida Maybe if she had confessed to him he might have fallen for her, it might have made him realize that people move on, that he must move on, and that he didn't have to go through all that pain he went through, I'm sure he liked her alot to the point of probably loving her but he only had eyes for Akari. The 3rd arc/story was just painful to watch, seeing how Akari forgot about him, how he was going through so much pain, realizing that he had lost everything that was beautiful, he even quits his job. It was soo sad.

and yes a torrent is out with all 3 combined and subbed. If you havn't watched this yet, watch it. It's a very touching story.

but i think that's the point of the whole thing, about how life changes and moves on.  so in the end, he was able to remember his life up till that point, and even though he may not/can not return to it, he faces the future with a smile in it's fond rememberance.

wow... ok the ending made me feel so down its not even funny, quick summary -------> first off they continue their lives but it seems the girl forgets about him bit by bit.... to make things worse when they really wanted to see eachother they missed eachother by about 20 seconds, or passed by eachother without knowing it was the other... last chance he had was when they were crossing a railroad track and they walked RIGHT BY EACHOTHER, i couldn't believe it... and when they both turned to look trains were passing by so she kept walking and of course was long gone by the time the trains leave, so he just smiles and keeps walking... poof, then end

Wow, I'm surprised after reading all the messages that no one mentioned that all the episodes were shown at Anime Expo this year. Subbed of course. And yes it is one of the best anime I've ever seen. The ADV peep there said that it wont be out thru them until next year. I'm hoping the sub will appear online sometime soon. ph34r.gif

not really, once you have been through it its not hard to talk about it in such a deep way, i went through tough times when i was still in 6th grade (not about a girl), anyways if you go through things like this hearing others talk about it doesn't really sound like wisdom anymore... thats how i felt at least, but irregardless it was extremely touching

im currently waiting for the other two OVAs which already aired in japans theatres i believe, they'll probably be releases here subbed around the same time they come out on DVD over there, i ersonally adore this story and cant wait

i have to agree to what you said but even then this anime is deep
